Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola, was born in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Abiola was a politician, businessman and philanthropist. Born without a silver spoon, Abiola earned a scholarship into Glasgow University, Scotland. At Glasgow, Abiola earned a First class degree in Accountancy. Also, he obtained a Distinction from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and became a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
Abiola was a senior accountant at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital (LUTH). Subsequently, he worked with Pfizer, before joining the ITT Corporation in 1968. But, MKO left the corporation after he rose to the position of Vice-President (Africa and Middle-East). As the Vice-President, MKO invested greatly in Nigeria and other countries in West Africa.
Some investments of Abiola were named; Abiola bookshops, Abiola Farms, Concord Press, Concord Airlines, Habib Bank, among other ventures. Due to his generosity, he was ordained the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, the highest and most prestigious title, by the Alaafin of Oyo.
Abiola commenced his political career through the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC). Afterwards, he moved to the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). Abiola contested and had the highest votes in the June 12, 1993, presidential elections. However, the election results were nullified by Ibrahim Babangida based on votes buying allegations.
In 1994, Abiola was arrested for treason after he publicly declared himself as the president of Nigeria. Sadly, Abiola died shortly after his release from prison in July 1998.
