Voter registration: Groups commend Ndigbo in North

By Onoja  Audu Correspondent, Jos

Igbo Democratic Forum (IDF) has been commended for  its role in the mobilization of Ndigbo in the North that fully participated in the just concluded voter registration in all the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

Various groups and individuals of Igbo extraction in the North, who spoke with  Daily Independent, commended the massive turn out of Ndigbo in the just concluded voter registration.

It would be recalled that Igbo Democratic Forum had late last year organized the  first Igbo in Northern Nigeria Political summit  in Jos  preceding  the voter registration.

Reviewing the participation of Ndigbo based in the North in the exercise, a group of intellectuals based in the Northern part of the country led by Dr  Kenneth Ozoilo said, “This was about the first time the Igbos would make it a point of duty to come about en masse and participate in voter registration with zeal and enthusiasm.”

Ozoilo on behalf of the  group noted that the usual apathy towards such exercise has waned and more Ndigbo have come to realize the essence of participating in the exercise in places where they are resident.

IDF had last year undertaken a campaign educating Ndigbo on the need to participate in the voter registration, pointing out the fact that they would not have any basis to complain if they do not participate in deciding the leadership of the country and of where they reside.

President of the Igbo Democratic Forum, Chief Chidi Ndu, had at different fora emphasized that the Ndigbo must stop relocating from their bases in times of election to go the South East to register or to vote but stressed that[b] since they are part and parcel of the places they are resident and contribute to the economic development of those places, they must remain and not only vote but even contest political positions.

Another group made up students from South Eastern Nigeria noted that such enlightenment campaign and education of the electorate is what has led to the massive participation of Ndigbo based in the north in the last registration and encouraged the IDF to step up the campaign to the next level by ensuring similar success in participation in the general elections.

Spokesperson of the students, Emeka Ani, commended the IDF for what he described as a job well done and urged both the federal and the 19 state governments in the north to support the cause of the IDF to bring about national integration and development.

Yes you're right. It shows that Igbos may have the highest population in Nigeria. It's even speculated that 70% of Ndigbo live outside Igboland.

If Igbos have the largest population in Nigeria and no party even consider you for VP, then something must be wrong with that ethnic group. It is a fact that Igbos are self-centered and would prefer to chase personal interest than group interest. That is what makes it look as if Igbo is just 1% of Nigeria population.

Even though this post looks tribalistic, you're not far from the truth. Individually Igbos are out of this world but on a group level they fall short.

Not true! Igbo could never have been VP under Goodluck - who already has a VP anyway. Igbos do not know the party CPC so theres no way an Igbo would have been filed for VP. The only prominent Igbo person that associates with AC - Dr Ngige declined to be the VP for AC (I take it he has done his math well. . .)

And the overall reason why Igbo isnt filing for presidency is cos of Goodluck Jonathan. It didnt make political sense to run against the South South at this time.

Dont get me wrong, I will vote AC in Lagos anyday

I wont lie, Igbos are way too individualistic for my liking. But it has been ingrained in our culture to strive for PERSONAL success. So its a blessing and a curse.

However, our population has been under-counted.

I pity any Igbo man that wastes his vote on Goodluck Jonathan. May I warn all Igbo brothers to further desist from the insinuation that majority of Igbo Votes will go to Jonathan. Igbos are not known for supporting mediocrity, corruption, visionlessness represented by Jonathan. IGBOS be warned. Onye nwere nti ya nuru!!!

Can't wait to see the day. . . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . .when an igbo man will aspire to be governor of KANO state!

Nevertheless, an igboman will never be trusted to be governor in any yoruba states and that includes Lagos!

You see how foolish posters, like to insert their people in every discussion. The article has nothing to do with Yoruba or the South-West, but they still want to insert themselves.
