Because of the nature of the bride "selection," the bride needed to stand on the left so that the groom's right hand (also known as his fighting hand) would be free to draw his sword without injuring his bride to defend her against any daring suitors who might try to steal her at the last minute.

The groom uses the right hand to draw his sword.. And defend his bride from other suitors who may want to steal his bride... It originated from a tradition where marriage by capture was practiced... Also that's where the position of the bestman came in... The bestman is supposed to be the best sword fighter among the grooms friends whose duty is to help the groom secure his bride and whisk her off successfully. For that reason only the best swordsmen were chosen as bestmen..
