In my opinion, the major cause of broken relationships is simply a lack of understanding or plain avoidance of the immediately obvious fact that some people are naturally born swingers who can never be committed to anything in life so its better not to start any sort of relationship with them in the first instance. I must say however that even such swingers atimes have stable relationships as long as their partners accept them for who they are.
At the end of the day relationships are about acceptance, which is why Sean Connery is able to stay married for over 50 years to a wife he periodically smacks in the mouth even in a society that abhors domestic violence while some of those who condemn him are unable to stay in a relationship for 3 days.

Selfishness
Lack of understanding
Lack of compassion
Ineffective communication
Lack of compromise
"I" Syndrome

These factors are major contributions to failed relationships/marriage.

Causes of broken relationship are lack of Love, Trust i.e insincerity and suspiciousness, Financial problem. But lack of love is the key factor b'cos love covers all sins/offences.
