I've watched with keen interests all the brouhaha in the Midwestern states of Ohio, winsconsin, Indiana et al, as well as in New jersey, my take on it? Elections matter. Period.

The republicans won the midterms and they are doing exactly as expected. I wish democrats act with similar boldness when they win. I remember the democrats being so disillusioned during the election in 2010, I was disillusioned too. But the clean sweep of democrats at the state level was some shellacking. Now the republicans are doing thier thing and people are protesting. Where were all these people during the election last yr?

Anyway, what has happened has happened, hope democrats get more involved in 2012 or else,

@topic,

What's happening in those States (and which will soon move to other States and the Federal Government), is not so much a result of the last election. This is the only logical path to follow when you run out of other people's money to spend. Do you think Obama or his predecessors will dare do a tenth of what they've done if they constitutionally have to balance their budget?

Unlike the FG that can print money, States can not do so or borrow endlessly. Now that they have reached the bottom-pocket of the tax payer, the sh*t has finally hit the fan. Hello austerity! grin
Re: The Gop Governors Assault by birdman(m): 9:42am On Mar 04, 2011
The unions are the convenient scapegoat for not having enough money to spend. If the unions go down, you can kiss the American way of life goodbye. Union wages act as a floor for white-collar jobs. Like the ppl of winsconsin, TayoD will realize he has been taken for a ride, but it will be too late.

Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve.

It doesnt matter who is in charge - the big corporations own american politicans - they (US politicians) are all rented whores who do the bidding of their paymasters.  whether you vote republican or democrat - its the same di.ck they use to keep shafting you the electorate.  They let you go to the polls evry 4 years to vote just to make you feel as if you have some control over your destiny, its nothing but a mindfu.ck, they couldnt give two fu.cks what you think, vote in the democrats the same multinational corporations carry on taking the piss out of you - by  shipping jobs overseas cutting public spending and now dismantling rights enshrined in the american constitution.

Did you know that George Bush Jnr took away the right from americans to challenge indefinite imprisonment without trial in 2006?  read up on the military commissions act 2006 which suspends the right of  habeas corpus.

Most americans are too busy watching x factor, america's next top model, how to marry a millionaire and other mind numbing bull sh.it therefore its so easy to pull the wool over the average american's eyes.

However when you start  interfering with people's livelihood as is the case with the governor of wisconsin people start waking up. Lets see how many more americans will snap out of this self induced coma and realise that their  comfortable way of life is now under attack.

Hmmm, interesting. But the good thing about the US is they have a system of one man one vote. The people can still vote their choice regardless of the cooperations. And moreover they have a powerful recall system whereby errant politicians can be recalled and someone else elected even before next elections.

But if Americans are interested in American idol, next model etc, Then the big guns will continue to demolish them until they wake up.

But you just gotta give it to these republicans men. They just do their thing. Period.

pres elect - it doesnt matter whether they have one man one vote - who ever they vote in they still end up with the same result - the system is rigged - the multinational corporations and the oligarchs run america. Any politician who steps out of line gets a bullet - remember JFK and his brother bobby?

the late great american comedian George Carlin says all this very succinctly here:

I think the Republicans enjoy screwing over the average person more. Either that or they do it more effectively.

but look at how much havoc has been wreaked so far under the Obama administration, look at all the bailouts given to the fat cats, the cuts in public spending and they out and out assault on the poor, Obama's economic policies are as right wing as the republicans.

Obama has been a big disappointment for the liberals.

Problem with the GOP is that when they wanna make cuts, they always target the common man.

How can you cut taxes on the rich, then try and cut wages on the poor by attacking the unions?

If a democrat wants to cut spending, he will attack taxes and waste in defence ministry.

If GOP wants to cut spending, he will attack the unions and the common man.

Thank God for our Conservatives in UK who proved that they are not hypocrites like the GOP. Our conservative raised taxes, whilst cutting spending on the common man.

The GOP wanna eat their cake and have it.

To support your argument, the GOP was prepared to let the tax cuts expire (increasing the deficit bt $700) last year as long as the top 2% wealthy people didn't get tax cuts with the rest of the country knowing fully well that letting the tax cuts expire would harm the US economy. Now the same GOP that wasn't interested in the ballooning deficit last year when it concerned the rich is now firing on all cylinders with regards to the deficit as it affects the ordinary American. The GOP is looking at a $2.5 trillion spending cut over ten years and are looking to cut programs such as rail transit, department of energy research, education programs, USAID, community devt., prohibit union membership for federal workers (to lower wages), etc.

Such duplicity is astounding. I agree that the US must address its ballooning deficit but everyone must pay.

if the republicans like let them cut everything including the air they breathe, they have the electoral right to desire to do so at this time. isnt democracy sweet?
