We need to understand the position of the Pope and the Catholic Church. the support for civil union must be clarified by Rome. Gay people are humans and must be protected by the law, but gay marriage is not accepted in the church.

The Pope was not even supporting the civil union of same sex marriage. At least from the answer he gave, I didn't see that at all. He was just saying that the society at large should not deny homosexuals the right to coexist peacefully with others. And that is true whether some people like it or not.
