THE House of Representatives on Wednesday said it was forced to summon the National Communications Commission when strange persons were calling and messaging public office holders during the recent #EndSARS protests.

The House stated that the identities of the owners of the telephone lines could not be ascertained as the Subscriber Identification Module cards used were not registered.

The NCC had threatened that SIM cards not linked to NIN issued by the National Identity Management Commission would be blocked.

However, the House called for an extension of the deadline issued to subscribers from two weeks to 10 weeks.

The Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, had moved a motion of urgent public importance at the plenary on Wednesday to demand more time for SIM card owners to provide their NIN.

The motion was titled, ‘Need for the Nigerian Communications Commission to give Nigerians reasonable time to submit their National Identification Number for SIM Registration’.

Adopting the motion, the House resolved that the exercise should end on January 28, 2021, as against the December 30, 2020, set by the NCC.

Moving the motion, Elumelu disclosed how the House was involved in the process.

He said, “Just yesterday (Tuesday), the NCC rolled out an instruction and the instruction is actually based on what is happening in Nigeria, rising from what happened during #EndSARS when hoodlums were using SIM cards to abuse and terrorise people in (public) office without being able to ascertain or track them.

“NCC was mandated that we should try as much as possible to ensure that all the service providers get all the SIM cards registered; and to first of all register with the National Identity Management Commission, and then have a National Identification Number, and you will take it to the (telecoms) service providers and they will register it.

“But, we did not envisage that having given that suggestion, that they would now come and say ‘we are limiting this process to only two weeks.’ Given the period that we are in, it will be almost impossible for 200 million Nigerians to meet the two weeks (deadline), hence this motion. The motion is not saying that we are condemning it; it is strictly for NCC to extend the two weeks.”

The Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu, called for amendment of the prayer to give the NCC a specific time.

The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, however, noted that the House already had a bill seeking synchronisation of all biometric data captured by the agencies.

So blame your reps for the corona spreading mandatory synchronization of NIN and SIM

You all remember when the protest began? that's when people who had numbers belonging to reps, governors , senators , e.t.c released them on twitter for everyone to call and ask them to support the protest

i even saw video of people who called tinubu and all the conversations were police

Bottom line your reps are using the law to oppress and intimidate the people and i won't be surprised if people who called those numbers to insult / curse or abuse those people get picked up

Because you called us and insult us , we are still angry , we want to deal with you , we are not your mates , so we have forced NCC to force you into registering your NIN to you SIM so we can track you easily and treat your fk

Hunger and the threat of dying or being kidnaped in Nigeria is eroding any fear or inhibition the masses have. A time is coming when people will come out boldly and tell these politicians to go fucckk themselves right into their faces. Who cares about being anonymous when hunger is ravaging them? The can link sim and name and nin and even face. We will still call them and tell them how low we think of them. Useless Politheifcians!

Oya write your rubbish as usual.

We already know their plans.
They don't want the Masses to threaten them. They want to silent the masses so that nobody will query them when they commit.
They will use the Police or DSS to arrest the person. Who even register National ID card with his full address? Make una continue. The monster you created will soon hunt you down.

They're too old and illiterate to know that people can still buy number online using app and also use it to make threaten calls.

Most unconvincing reason ever. I have no problem with syncing your sim with NIN. My own issue is that there is not enough time to get majority of us registered before the deadline

Wow. These people are really out for us. It doesn't matter whether they're in APC or PDP, they're just very much united to consolidate their power. You're a public official but when the public calls you, you take offense.

It's not even because of incessant insecurity bedeviling the country that pushed this policy

Maybe EndSARS was the cause of the kidnap in Kankara and the killings in Borno farmers
