in Enugu[/size]

Efforts by the Federal Government to
realize steady power supply through its
Public Private partnership (PPP) initiative
in the energy sector has received a boost
with the injection of about 10,000
megawatts to the national grid in Enugu State. The latest power intervention plan
from the private sector was disclosed by
the Chairman of Hamex Engineering of
India; the firm handling the project, Mr.
Saxena Nagendra. Besides, Hamex Engineering and Enpower
Energy, operators of the Enpower Enugu
Power and Energy Free Trade Zone (FTZ)
have equally signed an investment
cooperation agreement to set up
manufacturing facilities for transformer resins and other related chemicals for the
power sector in the proposed FTZ. “The success in the ongoing power reform
programme in Nigeria will be sustained
through the development of the support
industry for power distribution
equipment. Nigeria was just like India in
the 80s and 90s prior to deregulation,” he said. The spokesman of Enpower, Emeka Ene
disclosed that the federal government has
made power generation and the power
sector reform a key priority, which, he
said, would be actively supported by the
proposed FTZ. According to him, Enpower is a PPP
initiative facilitated by the Enugu State
Government with the active support of
the federal government focused primarily
on the development of the FTZ for power
generation and coal conversion technologies and other industrial related
activities. “Enugu is a major source of coal suitable for power generation. But at the
moment, no FTZ is currently operating in
the South East geo political zone.
Although, there are over 30 FTZ operating
in the country presently. Our approval
process for the FTZ is nearing completion. Also, the Special Adviser to Enugu State
Government, Mr. Jude Akubilo noted that
that besides the FTZ project providing up
to 10,000 megawatts of alternative
power generation to the national grid, it
would equally create about 30,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities
thereby serving as an important Foreign
Direct Investment (FDI) destination haven
for coal and energy related activities in
the South Eastern zone and Nigeria in
general.
