Bayelsa:

Violence in Bayelsa

Written by Hope Abah Saturday, 02 April 2011 12:32

Violence has broken out in a small town in the creeks of Bayelsa. Gunmen began firing around 9am in Ekeremor town, about 45 minutes by boat from the capital Yenagoa, the Joint Task Force has confirmed.

No news on the number of gunmen or casualties is available yet. No election materials have yet arrived in Yenagoa.

"If they have not arrived by 1pm I don't believe there will be any election in Bayelsa," the Labour Party's candidate for governor Timi Alaibe told the Daily Trust's Bayelsa correspondent Hope Abah.

Ebonyi:

Three feared dead, 10 injured in Ebonyi

Three persons are believed to have been killed in electoral violence in some parts of Ebonyi State between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Reports said a former councillor and agent of the Peoples Democratic Party, Nwani Egede, was killed at Ntezi while Iruka Nkwegu was murdered at Amuzu, both in Ezza Local Government Area this morning.

Their alleged killer is said to have been arrested by the police and is currently in custody.

THE PUNCH learnt that fighting between supporters of the PDP and All Nigeria Peoples Party in Ikwo and some other parts of the state had claimed one life.

The police were said to be alarmed at the scale of violence as well as the nature of sophisticated weapons used by the combatants.

During a shootout between PDP and ANPP supporters in Amagu in Ikwo Local Government Area, one person was killed while another was critically injured and rushed to the hospital.

Clashes also broke out at 11pm on Friday at Inyaba in Ishielu Local Government Area when PDP supporters allegedly tried to kidnap some ANPP members.

The violence forced residents to flee, while a detachment of 60 soldiers was swiftly drafted to the area to restore peace.

Voters also refused to come to polling stations in the troubled areas for fear of being killed.

The spokesman for the state police command, Mr. John Eluu, confirmed the incidents at Inyaba and Ikwo.

He also told our correspondent that the police had discovered fake ballot papers in Ishielu
