NEMA Sacks Over 42 Workers After Denying Them 1-year Salary by Islie: 6:56pm On Feb 09, 2021
The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has sacked over 42 of its newly recruited workers without paying them a one-year salary.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the sacked workers were recruited in December 2019 – a couple of months before the sack of former Director-General Mustapha Maihaja.

While trying to finalise documentations and settle in the new workplace, the new NEMA management led by AVM Muhammadu Mohammed wrote to the new staffers, informing them that their appointment was illegal, adding that some civil service regulations were not duly followed.

The letter, dated June 30, 2020, asked them to stay action pending the outcome of conclusive investigation.

Issuing a second letter, dated January 25, 2021 and signed by a NEMA Deputy Director, Musa Zakari, NEMA told the affected staff that the “the outcome of the investigation shows that the laid down rules and regulations guiding recruitment into the civil service were not duly exhausted, thereby vitiating the whole process and its outcome”.

The letter, therefore, cancelled the appointment letters given to the new recruits forthwith for “being not in order”.

Earlier, on September 8, 2020, the affected workers had petitioned the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, seeking her intervention in the development.

The sacked workers, some of whom resigned from their jobs to take the NEMA offer, insisted that they passed through all the necessary processes regarding recruitment into the agency.

According to them, relevant bodies took part in the exercise, “the Federal Character Commission which has since issued NEMA a certificate of compliance and also the Public Service Institute which ensured a seamless exercise and also ensured that the most suitable candidates were recruited to take up the various vacant positions spanning various levels and grades”.

“We have all resigned from our various places of work and now have no means of taking care of ourselves and dependents. This month September makes it exactly one year since the recruitment exercise.

“By December, we will be marking one year of untold hardship as a result of appointment without employment.

“We were issued temporary means of identification which stated categorically that we are bonafide staff of the agency.

“The recruitment exercise was approved by NEMA Board as far back as 2018. At that time, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development did not exist. Why then is the Ministry now stalling our progress?,” the affected staff said.

The sacked workers disclosed that they never received a kobo from NEMA as salary or support of any form since taking the appointment.

They also alleged that some NEMA officials are all out to truncate their recruitment, saying, “This is glaring in the way and manner NEMA officials have handled this matter. We are treated as enemies rather than comrades.”

“The former DG, Engr. Maihaja did not employ us to work for him, rather we were recruited to serve our country Nigeria through NEMA,” the workers added.

I HOPE IT IS NOT A WURUWURU APOINTMENT LIKE SOME DOES FEW DAYS OR MONTHS TO THE EXPIRATION OF THEIR TENURE.

.........the outcome of the investigation shows that the laid down rules and regulations guiding recruitment into the civil service were not duly exhausted, thereby vitiating the whole process and its outcome
If the laid down rules guiding recruitment were not followed or not duly exhausted, then that is not the problem of the then applicant, the problem should be with NEMA.
They better recall them back after paying them their full wages for their sweat now.
If they refuse to do that between now and 72 hours,
We will take this to the next level.

“The former DG, Engr. Maihaja did not employ us to work for him, rather we were recruited to serve our country Nigeria through NEMA,” the workers added.
If the predecessor and successor had a problem between themselves, they should sort it out and not make it a case of the grass suffering when two fat elephants are fighting.
This rubbish must stop in our NATION..........NOW!

Despite all the antagonism you sometimes face here, I want to believe that in the depth of your heart you are a good person. Might not necessarily see eye-to-eye with you on several of your opinions (the political ones) but when it comes to issues of empathy and humanity I'm often amazed at how I align with your views and positions. Continue being you irrespective of whether I (or the several other haters here) like you or not
You know nothing everyone likes the truth but we will always say it.
Truth is not bitter, People are just bitter to the truth
And talking about political affinity,
We respect everyone's choice.
Those who are with us and those who love our darling country are more than the haters.
The masses made their choice twice and integrity won over thieves and looters both times.
And for the records, below is the reason they don't like us,

We can't count how many times, some dumb people said in derogatory ways,
that is the same person as Righteousness89, only because he talks about JESUS CHRIST the same way we have been doing for many years here, ( the person has replied them many times, we guess he is tired of doing that now!)

Well in all these, people can now understand the kind of people that don't like dem MANNA, it shows those kinda people are criminals, fraudsters, losers, psychiatric patients, miserable souls, enemies of Nigeria and never do well in life.

People shouting if you work hard you will make it in Nogeria dont understand how this bastardized system works.
No protectectio for workers at any level and employees just taking advantage of the systems including the banks. Theirs contract staff is more than 75% than their normal staff including non payment of overtime and all this go unchecked and unnotice cos they are the conduit for corrupt gluttons so they dont care about the common youth. The Senate too is not we working

They shouldn't hesitate to sue NEMA. Nonsense

I've never seen any sector headed by fulani that was run successfully...buhari came in the 80s and installed his people in all the key sectors. Because he was military head of state, nobody dared say pim. Even now that he's suddenly become a democrat , he's doing just the same. I was at FIRS today where one of their staff was saying the office began going down in performance after fowler left...same man they revolted against after he brought that sector from nothing to something, just because they wanted to take over, seeing how juicy the place had become.

Is there anything good coming out from this buhari administration? No.
buhari has put some nigerians in trial and temptation, while he's in aso villa doing nothing spending billions of naira for just food and useless travelling.

Why is it that an average northern Muslim in power of authority lacks human feelings?

If they were not duly employed, why not regularise their employment?

Same govt that absorbed "repentant" bokoharam members in the military is denying these innocent people daily bread.

Na wa oo.
