Farmers in Okogbe clan, in the Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State are counting their losses after an oil spill destroyed farmland, crops and fish ponds worth millions of naira.

It was gathered that two separate spills from Okordia-Rumuekpe pipeline operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company and Ogoda-Brass pipeline operated by the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) occurred in the area around the middle of 2020.

Some of those affected claimed that the spills, which was not cleaned, was dispersed by flood into the surrounding communities, culminating in a fire which devastated farmlands, streams, forest and other sources of livelihoods

One of the farmers, Dr Patricia Ogbonnaya, said she noticed crude oil in her farmland in December 2020, adding that despite several letters to the multinational companies to ensure a proper clean-up, they ignored her.

Ogbonnaya stated, “There are laws that guide the operations of these multinationals; these laws are being upheld in other places, but in Niger Delta and Ekpeyeland particularly, these laws are ignored.”

A monarch in the area, HRH Ikaki Ikaki, said the action of the companies had brought untold hardship to those who rely on farm produce for survival.

“What played out here is really pathetic and we are surprised that up to this time, Shell and Agip have not come to compensate our people. The farm has been very helpful to our people. Traders come here, company come here;the buy fish.

“The forest is majorly affected by the flood. So, we are calling on SPDC and Agip to come to our aid, clean this spill,” he pleaded.

The spokesman for Shell, Bamidele Odugbesan, said he would get back to our correspondent, but had yet to do so as of press time.

The spokesman for Agip, Dennis Masi, neither answered calls to his mobile nor responded to a test message sent to him.

What is it with oil companies in Nigeria and oil spillage. You rarely hear of spillage when they operate in developed countries, but when they are in Nigeria, anything goes.

That has become our story after using resources from the south to develop the North they want to divert food stuffs to other countries.

Nigeria is a failed state.

And those who don't have oil think they are useless. If I tell you what I went through in Bayelsa when I visited in 2017, you'll learn to be happy with what you have.

Damn it Mehn. What’s the point of being a Nigerian when foreigners can’t come in and at least give us respect on our land. They come in and don’t follow laws, destroy things, plunder is and repatriate every penny back to their home countries. Who we offend as a people?

Local communities that should be benefiting from these oil companies are suffering daily. ‘Unemployment rate is high, turn to farming’ yet no one is safe on their farms. If it’s not killer herdsmen or bandits, it’s killer oil spillage.

It is extremely sad that we claim to be giant of Africa. Yet multinationals behave better when they are in countries like South Africa, Botswana or Angola than they behave in Nigeria. Utter disregard for our laws and our people. Yet we remain a toothless giant. A ‘cloutless’ Nation.

Na part of why north Dey do shakara with food be this.

Nonsense and Buhari undecided

This is so painful especially at this critical time when
1.Ram is sold for 1million
2.Turkey (talo talo) for 30k

Even grasscutters will become scarce in that kind of farmland...

An urgent measure need to be taken asap.We don't want to lack common fish by Easter...

The oil companies should not be blamed completely.

1. Most oil spillages are as a result of sabotage by strong men in the communities so that oil companies can pay them compensation & award them juicy oil cleaning contracts.

2. Gbo fire & illegal refineries operators may have caused this oil spillage, as this is a major activities around Ahoada East & Ahoada West axis.

Traditional Rulers & Chiefs should be called to question for allowing illegal refineries & oil bunkery to strive in their dormain.

3. From Ahoada (before the bridge), Abua Road to Okogbe axis, you will see disiel trucks lining up to load illegally refined petroleum products on daily basis.

4. Some Nig. Soldiers hv lost their lives because of their confrontation with the boys.

5. Illegal refinery & gbo fire activities is not without breaking of oil pipes. So the matter is hydra headed & it has gone out of government control

They scoop the oil from the south ... They repair roads In the North with the proceeds...

Yet they could try to stop bringing food stuff to the South.. I wonder what they would have done if the oil was from the North..

These uncircumcised gentiles are just God's way of punishing his people ...

Let the south break out of this unholy union

There is an Agency of the Federal Government- The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that oil spills are cleaned up and contaminated sites are remediated.

the people of that community are all very stupid, when their children where puncturing the pipe lines to steal the oil did they complain or report to the authorities? NO

they felt they are just taking their share of national cake.

those guys puncture these pipelines after which the can't control the oil coming out, the guys responsible have probably moved to another spot.

and all of them in that community know about it but they'll keep quiet, now the aftermath is hitting them they are complaining.

if and when it is fixed, they'll still be another spillage again until they all start being reasonable themselves.

there are pipelines heading to other regions but you really hear about pipeline damage , WHY?

all these guys up there making noise, I know deep within your mind you know it's a lot there own fault.

the reason white people easily develop anywhere they are is because they always see things plane without bias nor emotions.

we must do the same if we want to grow.

enough of shifting blames, OWN UP.
