The Sultan, who spoke in a statement, also blamed government's inaction and unregulated statements on the social media as responsible for the avoidable conflicts.

According to him, reckless statements from freedom fighters and other citizens have provoked reactions that have led to loss of lives and property over time.

The Sultan, who spoke in a statement, also blamed government's inaction and unregulated statements on the social media as responsible for the avoidable conflicts.

He called on traditional and religious leaders to educate and restrain followers from fuelling violence with their speeches.

The traditional ruler also reiterated calls on the Nigerian government and state governments to act promptly.

He said, “Nation building has always been a slow and painstaking process. This is particularly so when these nations are created by colonial fiat.

“The colonial authorities used the divide and rule techniques, where insinuations of suspicions among different peoples and tribes was the main tool of governance. By disrupting the slow but sure process of social integration, they generate social tension which needs to be managed over time to avoid conflicts.

“Our founding fathers have done a lot to ameliorate these challenges, heal a lot of these wounds and suspicions. Even when the bitterness planted led to civil war, the military leaders who brought the civil war to its end quickly created policies like the policy of ‘No Victor No Vanquished’ which did a lot to assuage the bitterness and douse the tension.

“Similarly, policies like the National Youth Service Corps, which gives young people the opportunity to live and know other fellow citizens, the unity schools located in different parts of the country and the visits between leaders of the traditional institutions and holding joint meetings, etc. All these and many more went a long way to bring about healing, understanding and accommodation.

“Unfortunately some of these gains were eroded over time. Today, we are at brinks again. In the last few months, tempers have run very high, reckless statements from ethnic champions have provoked all manners of reactions which subsequently led to the loss of human lives, and the property and livelihoods of many citizens. While this was fuelled by the social media, the inaction of government has allowed many avoidable loss of lives to happen.

“We must quickly learn our lessons. State actors which have the primary responsibility to protect lives and property must be alert and prompt in their duties and responsibilities.

“Our role as traditional and religious leaders is to educate and restrain our followers and other citizens, many of whom have not witnessed the civil war and hence glorify it with their reckless speeches.

“War is not something to wish for, even when you think you will eventually win it. During my career as a military officer, my tour of duty took me to Pakistan and the borders of Afghanistan, where I saw conflicts and deaths and disruptions of lives with people who were otherwise comfortable, finding themselves in IDPs (internally displaced persons') camps with all the indignity and sufferings.

“Before then I was in Liberia and Sierra Leone where I saw the results of ravaging civil war with inhuman atrocities afflicted on fellow citizens and this had left a deep scar on the psyche of these nations. And the most recent examples/happenings in Syria and Yemen are still fresh in our minds. In all cases, the conflicts disrupted their progress and destroyed their opportunities and they are still struggling to catch up with the rest of the world.

“We need to appeal to our senses to realise that no one has a monopoly of violence and returning violence with violence only multiplies violence. It is not bravery to attack vulnerable people when you can resort to law; it is savagery.

“As educated elite, we must reflect deeper and learn from the history of other countries. Societal problems are human and we should be educated enough to know that we can solve our problems without having to carry a stick much less fire a gun. No problem is beyond dialogue; even when you go to war, at the end of it all you must sit around the table to work out peace.

“We need to reiterate our calls on government at both federal and state levels to act promptly, swiftly and decisively. Any inaction may be construed as weakness. Government must send clear signals and walk its talk. Traditional institutions, even as they have no control of the coercive instruments of state, can do a lot to restrain their people from taking the law into their hands, for these institutions enjoy the trust and confidence of their people.”

these people should desist from brainwashing their followers and religion worshippers in the north..
No one wants war and nobody has monopoly for violence too.
They will brainwash their followers thinking virgins await them in heaven while they enjoy all the virgins here on earth..
The northern part of the country needs to be educated, I mean serious education

Sultan, if you really want to speak like an elite which you claim to be and to show that Yi you have the interest of Nigeria at heart, you should speak about restructuring this country

Tell the president that if he can't restructure then let the country be divided

After all we all are tired of this federation

Many of these naive teenagers fueling ethnic crises have no idea what they're saying.

In wars, no one losses and no one wins. Only the weapon dealers (America and co) win.

Till today, the south East is yet to fully recover from the biafra civil war.

Go to Ife and modakeke in Osun State. They're yet to recover from their foolish ethnic war.

Only naive teenagers who take their knowledge from hollywood would think wars are entertaining.

Should I burst your brain?
Many of the Igbos who were kids during the biafran war and manged to survive curse their fathers for going into that foolish war. People's brothers were forcefully recruited and given arms. Mothers and children starved helplessly.

Yes, many herdsmen are causing so much havoc but this tribal profiling is not a step in the right direction. In fact, the best way to solve it is by having insiders. We need to identify the non-criminal ones and work with them to deal with the criminals. Now, how can someone you're calling a devil be willing to provide help.

We shouldn't slaughter logic and rationale on the alter of emotions.

War seems inevitable to Nigeria's current situation. We need a reset.
Instead of dieing one by one is it not better we fight it now once and for all?
And let fulani be guided this time. In the last war it was all tribes against igbos and Niger Deltans. This time around even hausa is tired of fulani wahala not to mention Yorubas who are now IDPs in Benin Republic. Middle Beltans have not finished paying for their first folly in dallying with Hausa fulani in the pogrom against the east. So they won't easily join them this time.

War in Nigeria is inevitable not because there can't be peace but because the ruling Fulani will not agree to a full restructure. They still think this is 1966.

It is your subjects and their marauding cousins from other African countries that are trying to bring war to the country.

This is the 21st century, social media and modernism can reveal both good and bad in a matter of second not like in the Stone age.

Call your subjects to order, to respect and tolerate others. Live and let live. Stop encouraging religious and tribal hatred.

Most of the people shouting 'war' here and there has not even experienced it I guezz

That is a bad thing to wish for..

I remember when me and my colleagues were posted to a community in Ogoni for examination supervision, we were not told their neighboring communities were seriously having a war..... The gunshots and murders was terrible.
You could hear people running, shouting, and crying for those who lost their loved ones.. angry

My colleagues almost pee for pant grin

War is NEVER a good thing !

We know.. Why not call your foot soldiers to order?

Disintegration is still the best solution, we have never been on the same page, NEVER.

Only the greedy and the richest still wants this contraption.

We are all too different, from culture, religion, tribe, beliefs, social norms, ethnics, views etc...

Figuratively, we are like the picture below, we are not supposed to be together and you KNOW it.

And what are the Fulanis, bandits and BH terrorists doing oga Sultan? I am greatly ashamed you once made this unpardonable statement;

"The sultan of Sokoto, the spiritual leader of Nigeria's Muslims, has condemned the military crackdown against the Islamist Boko Haram sect. "We cannot solve violence with violence," -Mohammed Sa'ad Abubakar.
