Black Friday in Imo Tony Uzoukwu Dies in Auto Crash Assassins Kill 7 Nwangele LGA Councillors

The people of Nwangele Local Government Council in Imo state will never forget Friday 8th April 2011, a day to the National Assembly elections in Nigeria.
It was a day men of the under-world assassinated seven councilors serving in Nwangele LGA.
Nigerian Horn gathered that the unknown gunmen stormed the venue of the councilors meeting place last Friday in Nwangele LGA and assassinated seven out of the councilors. In another development, a trailer carrying about 600 bags of cement on the wee hours of Saturday smashed the 306 Peugeot car of Hon Tony Uzoukwu killing him on the spot.
Eye witness told our reporter that the incident happened at about 12:00 to 12:30am on Saturday, when Uzoukwu the former commissioner for youths and sports in Imo state was coming back from a political meeting at All Seasons Hotel and was smashed by a trailer coming from Port-Harcourt  road. The over loaded trailer with registration number Imo XB 120 UNC collided with the Peugeot in front of Benuak filling station, close to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua drive.
Information reaching Nigerian Horn is that when the accident occurred, people around had to break the doors of the car to pull out the dead body of Uzoukwu.
The police patrol team from New Owerri Police station took his body to many hospitals in Owerri, including Federal Medical Centre, FMC but his body was rejected and they took him to Christiana Specialist Hospital Egbu where he was received.
Nigerian Horn equally gathered that when the accident occurred, the driver of the Mack truck escaped and later reported himself to New Owerri police station.
When our reporter tried to speak with the officer in charge of the patrol team that took the body of Uzoukwu to hospital, he declined statement and referred him to the D.P.O. All efforts made to see the DPO or the District Traffic Officer (DTO) proved abortive as at the time of filling the report.
Meanwhile the Imo state governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, regrets to announce the untimely death of a former Commissioner in his Administration, Chief Tony Uzoukwu, in a ghastly motor accident in the earlier hours of Saturday. April 9 2011 along Port Harcourt Road, Owerri.
The governor commiserates with the family of the late Chief Uzoukwu while praying Almighty God to give the family the fortitude to bear the loss.
His Excellency described the late Uzoukwu as a forthright person who died in the course of contributing to the development of the state and the wellbeing of its people.
His Excellency, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, also commiserates with the families of the seven councilors killed by assassins in the Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo state on Friday April 8, 2011 while they were holding a meeting in preparation for the National Assembly Elections held last Saturday. His Excellency deeply regrets the incident but admonishes the good people of Imo state to find solace in the fact that the late politicians died in the course of working for democracy.
