The recent report of a security breach in the home of the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Sule Gambari, highlights how the insecurity that permeates the entire nation now affects those at the very top of our leadership. It is the latest in a line of security lapses surrounding the Presidency and emphasizes the potential for violence amongst politicians seeking to position themselves for prominence in post-2023 Nigeria. On the 10th of May, 2021, there was a bombshell report alleging that armed men had broken into the homes of the Chief of Staff as well as an admin officer in the Presidency, Mr Abubakar Maikano. The report stated that the residences were ransacked. Naturally, reactions to the news were fast, loud and varied. Commentators on Twitter wondered how a Presidency that cannot protect itself and those in it could protect ordinary Nigerians. Dr Joe Abah, a public sector reform consultant, tried to distinguish between the Presidential Villa and the neighbourhood of Aso Rock that surrounds it. He implied that the security around the Presidency would not extend to the residence of the men that effectively run it. Unfortunately, the reactions from the Presidency itself was confusing. Mr Bahir Ahmed, the Personal Assistant to the President on New Media, simply dismissed the entire story as “fake news”. However, the official spokesperson to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu confirmed the main plot of the story, stating that an “attempt” was made to gain entry into the residence of the Chief of Staff at 3 AM that morning. He also confirmed that the home of the admin officer was broken into the previous week. Both residences are about a street away from the Villa.
