OYAN DAM RELEASE: LAGOS ALERTS RESIDENTS

Lagos State Government, on Tuesday, alerted residents in areas contiguous to the Ogun River about the steady release of water from the Oyan Dam, urging everyone to standby in case there is a need to move from their locations.

A statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, said officials of the State have been monitoring the release, which was earlier announced through an advisory.

He listed areas where the release of water is being felt as Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun and Ogolonto, stressing that the intensity of rainfall recorded in Lagos and flow of connecting rivers determines the level of water that would be released by the Oyan Dam authorities.

He added that within the last week, the volume of water released had increased from 15,000 to 21,000 millilitres but reduced to 17,000 millilitres on Monday.

Bello stated that more water would be released from Oyan Dam and is expected to reach the peak in October, advising residents in low-lying areas to be on standby to move to higher grounds.

“Specifically, residents who live in the downstream of Isheri Olofin up to part of Agboyi will experience flooding as earlier predicted”, he noted.

The Commissioner, similarly, stressed that the Onikoyi/Agelete Community at IBA New Town in IBA Local Council Development Area may also experience flooding due to the proximity to Yewa River.

The Oyan River Dam is in Abeokuta North local government area of Ogun State. The dam crosses the Oyan River, a tributary of the Ogun River. It is used primarily to supply raw water to Lagos and Abeokuta, but has potential for use in irrigation and power generation.

Heavy rainfall in Ogun State in 2010 forced authorities of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to open the flood gates and release water from the dam in order to reduce pressure. This led to flooding in Ikorodu and other parts of northern Lagos (even though it had not rained in that part of Lagos). The Lagos State Government had to relocate residents of the area to a relief camp.

Lagos State was ruled by the ACN, while Ogun State was ruled by the PDP at that time and this led to a bit of friction between both governments. However, an agreement was eventually reached between the Lagos State Government, the Ogun State Government and the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to create a committee to manage release of water from the dam. This committee ensures that the Lagos State Government is informed before water is released from the dam. The committee has announced that it will release water from the dam in September and October.

By the way, the Lagos State Relief Camp is at Igando. That's where victims of the 2010 Ikorodu Flood were moved to. The camp has also been used to temporarily house victims of the Ojo Gas Explosion and victims of the Lagos Island Building Collapse.

I think other camps have since been built in other parts of the state.

Please of what purpose is the release of the dam? And why not wait till dry season if they must do it?

Can't the water be used for Large scale irrigation farming in the area rather than this perennial release.

A 5000 hectares will utilize the excess fully. Why are we so dumb

do u need irrigation during rainy season or dry season ? For them to release d water it is because the dam is filled to the capacity it can hold and don't forget we re still expecting more rainfall in weeks to come. Failure to release it might destroy d dam

It is common for dam operators to discharge excess water through the spillway during spring runoff to maintain the proper reservoir height or when they need to cut back on power generation. Dams can also use the spillway to control other factors such as increased river flow. Typically dams will also have an emergency spillway. The emergency spillway is often a portion of the dam that is designed to have water flow over it in an emergency. This emergency spillway sits lower than the main dam infrastructure so that excess water flows through it and not over the main dam itself. Basically it is a reinforced portion, often on one side, that channels water over the dam in a location where it won’t damage the integrity of the dam face.

The water has been dammed before raining season...if it has been utilize before now it won't need releasing.

This dam is not opened Every year just like once in 5 years.

Where do you expect the water to enter if not Lagos? Is there ocean or sea in Oyo or Osun? every river enters sea or ocean

Heavy rainfall means that there is too much water and if some of that water is not released, the pressure would be too much on the dam and the whole thing might collapse.

It's already full, if the water isn't released then it will break the dam resulting in more crises.

It is released almost yearly, just that the rate of release/flow of water depends on the rainfall pattern.

The Ogun River empties into the Lagos Lagoon in northern Lagos, near Ikorodu. That's the way nature made it. The Oyan River empties into the Ogun River, the Ogun River empties into the Lagos Lagoon and the Lagos Lagoon empties into the Atlantic Ocean via creeks and channels.

The Oyan Dam was built across the Oyan River.

Usually, when rainfall is heavy, excess water is released from the dam in order to reduce the pressure. If you know how a dam works, then you'll know that water is released all the time, but the difference in this case is the volume of water that is being released.

The dam could collapse if the water is not released and the pressure becomes too much.

That's not how damming works, you need water at a particular level in a dam for it to serve it's purpose whether irrigation or power generation. So they use it as intended but with more rainfall, the water level rises too, so you increase the flow towards the ocean. If not the dam breaks and people die.

What has happened is that due to poor town planning, residential areas have evolved on the path of the river when it flows heavily, hence, the need to alert and evacuate when need be. It is released every year.
