Nigeria Serviced Debt With ₦1.47 Trillion In First Half 2021 – DMO by sophsia62: 5:18am On Oct 05, 2021
Nigeria spent N1.47tn on debt servicing payments in the first half of 2021, data obtained from the Debt Management Office have shown.

In the first quarter of the year, the country spent N1.02tn on both domestic and external debt servicing, while a total of N445.45bn was spent in the second quarter of 2021.

From January to March 2021, Nigeria spent N612.71bn on domestic debt servicing, while it spent $1bn (N410.33bn) on external debt servicing.

From April to June 2021, Nigeria spent N322.7bn on domestic debt servicing and $299m (N122.7bn) on external debt servicing.

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Nigeria ($1 is N410.33) as of October 4 was used for the external debt servicing.

For domestic debt, Nigeria spent N219.29bn in January, N125.09bn in February, N270.33bn in March, N258bn in April, N42.4bn in May, and N22.3bn in June.

In Q1, the government focused on principal repayments, while in Q2, the government focused on interest payments.
A breakdown of the statistics in Q2 shows that the Federal Government spent a total of N322.7bn on the payment of interest, with N50.3bn expended on the redemption of matured Nigeria Treasury Bills.

For external debt servicing in Q1, commercial loans had 76 per cent with a cost of $763.04m (N313.10bn), multilateral had 13 per cent with a cost of $134.04m (N55bn), and bilateral had 11 per cent with a cost of $106.33m (N43.63bn).

For external debt servicing in Q2, commercial loans had 53 per cent with a cost of $157m (N64.4bn), multilateral had 35 per cent with a cost of $103.7m (N42.5bn), and bilateral had 13 per cent with a cost of $38.2m (N15.7bn).

Economists have consistently condemned the borrowing rate of the government on the premise that the loans were being spent on consumption rather than capital projects that can generate revenue to service the debts.

Apolitical economist and former presidential candidate, Prof. Pat Utomi, had explained that the implication of government spending a major amount of its revenue on debt servicing was that the Federal Government borrowed to finance other expenditures that it incurred within the period.

He added that the trend of continuous borrowing would further worsen the economic conditions of the country.

This is terrible.

Buhari has mortgaged Nigeria’s future.

No wonder the cow was advocating debt cancellation at UNGA.

Servicing debt isn't even the problem, the agreement and conditions in getting these loans are worrisome. It puts the financial state of the nation in jeopardy.

In the land of the blind ... the one eyed man is king!

Nigeria is the land of blind citizen that is why one eyed people are ruling

I have said it before anything that has to do with numbers we should begin to develop systems that can't be manipulated. All this big big monies they are writing to service debt, we all know there will be some magomago, wuruwuru, chopuchopu. Osinbajo has started giving the hint ...youth wake up, it takes nothing to set things straight if only we as youth start to take our future serious and forget about individual. These old analog minds have mortgaged our future, and they will continue to do so for as long as we continue to remain blind.

How much has Rivers State, bayelsa, Delta and akwa ibom where the bulk of money used in servicing this loan benefited in terms of infrastructural development. The allocation style of the federal government in recent time has show how unjust the Nigerian state have deliberately perpetrated Injustice to it's citizenry thereby having an inevitable violence as result for it's bias and sentiment. Hmm...

As usual, the wailing and gnashing of teeth on this thread is epic...yet no one wants to ask the question, why are we in debt.

We have been in debt for years because our economy is based on selling raw materials like cotton, cocoa, palm oil, rubber and lately c rude oil.

The problem with this model is that the price of these commodities

1.Are not controlled by us, but in London, Paris and New York.

2.Are never at sustenance level for us.

So, we have to take loans most of the time when the price of what we sell falls below sustenance.

That's why Nigeria has to change its economic paradigm...from being an exporter of raw materials to being an exporter of industrial goods and services. We will control the prices and set the prices and earn enough money

Also, we have two bad habits

1. We import in excess of what we export

2.We throw away billions subsiding fuel and electricity. Because the cost of production of both is always rising, the amount we spend subsidsing it always rises...and this drains our frex earnings...leaving us broke...and in need of more loans.

Which is why becoming more industrial, and removing subsides so that 1) income can grow 2) investment can grow 3) pressure on forex earnings reduces....is key to reducing our debt.

But then again, we will always have debt.

But the thing is, most Nigerians vote for parties like PDP and APC which give us flawed economic policiies....

Great morning to y'all.

For now I have no where to go, all we have to pray is healing, because the political bourgeoisie have used their malfeasance used in perpetrating themselves into office to ensure that the country is in disarray.
The truth is that the country gives us no hope, every day we keep sinking.

Well , u blame the North.
They got 95% of the loan borrowed. They are basically paying 0% debt. The South that got 5% of the loan borrowed by Buhari will be paying 100% of the debt with Southern resources and taxes.

Tinubu own the blame for selling an expired product to the South in 2015.

Its a foolish father that will use 80% of his salary to borrow money, and use the money to do foundation of his building project. When the borrowed money exhausted, he won't move to the house, yet he will still be paying house rent and every other obligations, with 80% gone, how would he sustain his family welfare?

It's on record that government in Nigeria can not do business successfully, yet bubu keeps piling debt to do railway and now refineries, not even railway that has very little minimum impact on economy , he is just doing it to satisfy his people in Niger republic a least for free flow of goods from Niger to Nigeria.

The painful thing is that the next government will not let this man taste all his misdeeds in government.

Well, your government has to go from being resource dependent to being industrial dependent to do so.

We can't pay off the debt so long as we all rely on oil. Crude oil revenues aren't enough for the whole country...unless crude is being sold at $140 per barrel, all other things remaining the same.
