About seven persons were feared dead, while unspecified numbers of persons sustained varying degrees of injuries when hoodlums suspected to be smugglers engaged operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in a gun battle on Saturday in Ogun State.

The incident, which occurred at Kobape village, along Abeokuta – Sagamu expressway in the Obafemi – Owode local government area of the state was allegedly ignited by suspected smugglers who unleashed terror on Customs operatives from the Federal Operation Unit (F.O.U) who were on routine enforcement operation in the area.

The bloody clash, which started around 5p.m on Saturday evening, left commuters and motorists stranded for more than two-hours when vehicular movements were halted along the expressway as motorists deserted the road for fear of being hit by stray bullets.

It was gathered that the NCS personnel had around 3p.m on Saturday intercepted some vehicles being used by the smugglers to convey large quantities of smuggled bags of foreign rice to an unknown destination, during which one of the drivers was equally arrested and whisked away.

An eye witness told newsmen that troubles started when the Customs’ F.O.U operatives refused to release the arrested driver, and as well rejected the settlement advances made by leaders of the smugglers.

The refusal of the NCS operatives however, allegedly infuriated the smugglers, who later turned the bargaining to violence, shooting one of the Customs personnel to death.

It was further gathered that both sides suffered numbers of casualties in the melee that later ensued as three (3) operatives were dropped dead, while four members of the smuggling syndicate also lost their lives.

It took the intervention of the combined security operatives, which included personnel of the Nigerian Army and the police to dislodge the smugglers in an intervention led by the Commissioner of Police in Ogun Command, Lanre Bankole.

In his reaction, the Public Relations Officer, FOU Zone A, Theophilus Duniya

two of the attackers lost their lives in the fracas, while two Customs operatives were wounded.

Duniya in a statement made available to bewsmen in Abeokuta said, “Customs patrol team from Federal Operations Unit Zone A, Lagos was attacked without provocation on Saturday afternoon during an operation along Shagamu Inter-change in Ogun State”.

“The patrol team had intercepted twelve vehicles of different kinds, laden with bags of foreign parboiled rice and were on their way to the government warehouse before smugglers mobilized themselves with the support of their sympathizers and attacked the team with dangerous weapons”.

“During the exchange of gun fire, two of the attackers lost their lives and one suspect was arrested. Out of 12 vehicles in the convoy of the smugglers , our operatives were able to leave with 4 of them laden with smuggled foreign parboiled rice”.

“The arrested suspect and the seizure have been brought to the Unit Headquarters, Ikeja”.

He added that the Ag. Controller of the Unit, Hussein K Ejibunu frowned at the avoidable loss of lives due to the unprovoked attack.

He has ordered full scale Investigations into the matter to apprehend other fleeing suspects with their smuggled wares.

He cautioned the youths to eschew violent confrontations with government operatives and be law abiding at all times

He added that such violent attacks will never deter or threaten customs operatives from carrying out their legitimate duties

Times are hard and there's obvious recession n hunger in the land and those asking you to curtail rice smuggling are somewhere in a better condition giving no two fvcks bout you or ur lives and instead applying wisdom and sense to make situations better, ur rather making it hard and even taking ur duty too far and they've now resolve to using arms
in desperation.

If Custom officers can't stop smugglers from smuggling goods into Nigeria at the boarder. Make dem just free the smugglers if dem don cross deep into Nigeria territory... Instead of engaging them in firefight.

The FG should start letting people import rice through the land boarder.

Tbis type of occurrence will not cease unless government officials stop making laws to favour themselves alone.

Opening the border will help the situation of this country since we can't produce anything here due to lack of power supply.

The problem with your ideology is that if the government allows a free for all at the border , we would

1.Have our local rice industry damaged....job lossses result.

2.Lose more forex...bad news for our economy.

There shouldun't be a total shutdown of imports...but smuggling should not be allowed.

We don't have a vibrant textile industry like we did in the 60's-early 90's because of massive smuggling from outside. That means job losses, and a host of other problems.

We are trying now to develop our rice industry for over a decade now. And smuggling threatens it.

The thing is, smuggling of rice harms us all. It harms the local rice industry, hindering job growth, and also causes loss of forex and revenue in customs duties and tax...WHICH forces us to be more dependent on loans, and worsens inflation (since oil money is not as plentiful as it should be).

Can't the government engage foreign investors from Thailand, China and USA to come in and bring in rice at an agreed tarriff and quality, then require them to set up local production with tax incentives in a 5-7 years Rice development plan.......a kind of backward integration policy like what Dangote and BUA are enjoying on sugar.

It surely can be done only if we set our minds to it

If the custom officer's collected the bribe, we will condem them for collecting bribe, now as they refused to collect, it turned to something else. RIP to the officers

Buhari pikin... Epele ooo.. See as you dey reason.... Government policies kill the textile industry my brother and it made importation attractive. The same with parboiled rice..

When last did you or your family eat the local rice? Secondly how much is it? Why is the government fighting a natural law? Do you know how much they sell rice in the north? It's far cheaper than the south and you know why? Because they borders are porous and the government isn't doing anything about it.

Government should fix the local rice productions and and make it affordable and cheaper and nutrients filled.. It will naturally displaced the demand for foreign rice. People are hungry , that's when you are planning to develop what was already dead. Isn't that wickedness?

Instead of the government to lower the import duty and tax so that people can bring rice through our ports thereby generating funds for the government, it is blocking our borders.

The government with her policies are killing Nigerians and businesses...

Do you know it is the same reasons why people prefer to import automobiles through the land borders because to clear a car at our port is more expensive and people will prefer other countries...

Stop your unnecessary sympathy for a failed administration and start reasoning normally.

Custom officer from the north will be the head in the south and will be arresting smugglers and the one in the north will be having freedom of moving in arms and ammunition and imported rice. God will judge you all

If I am the president...I will bring the full force of the federal power against the smuggler.
I will find their warehouse, auction or dash it out. Reposses the facilities for government, shut out the smuggler from using Nigerian banking system and forfeit their money to government. Go after their personal asset and auction...I will still go after any of their adult children whom might have received money from their account and put them as accomplice.

If customs failed to do their job properly at the boarder to stop smuggling then i see no sense coming into town to mount road blocks thereby putting people’s life at risk. It’s just unreasonable. Government needs to reform the agency.
