So FG is the one telling us why people are unemployed. What are they expecting in the first place?

Excuses of Government towards youth unemployment0

1. Skills deficient. This is easy to resolve. since the youth in question are already graduates, it won't take much to employ and transfer such skills as required by government agencies or organizations. Why advice youth to gain skills that they have no employment to practice and exercise those skills.

2. Get rich quick syndrome. This is suppose to be a good thing and attitude that the government is using against the youth instead of harnessing this energy to raise the gross GDP and per capita income of the nation statistically. The government owe it to the youth about supporting fun-filled events of the youth and not turn it to avenue to man hunt social vices that they consider bad to their image.

3. What am i even saying
stop mentioning this "get rich" stuff like u are mad! If someone is hungry what do u expect them to do?

Millions of Nigerians are unemployed because of the bad foreign exchange policies introduced by President Buhari upon his assumption of office on May 29, 2015. This has devastated the economy and has led to lamentable economic growth and massive job losses ever since..

Even his deputy, Osinbajo alluded to the wrongheaded forex policies which discourages supply of forex but boosts demand for it. A prime example of market failure. Mr. Buhari has no business dictating forex policy which is not only the purview of the central bank, but something which he has repeatedly shown has no comprehension of.

Would you keep quiet? Eweee!!! Lack of technlcal-know-how by the response team to use the life detector at the 21 storey building that collapse at ikoyi is whose fault? After all you only employed them based on connection and not through the right channels. You have the audacity to tell us that we lack skills, do you think we don't know about sharing of job slots among the govt parastatals. What about the ghost workers spiritually occupying offices and cashing out still there is nothing govt is doing about it. I have never been so harsh on the govt using this platform before. I am really pained to see this coming from our govt with such insult on the educated masses. At first you call us the lazy youth, no chances and opportunity given to us to exercise our right. However when we have the so call to fight for our right, you the Agbalagbas will end up hijacking it.

The federal government has explained that millions of graduates in the country are unemployed because they do not have specific skills required for the job market.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Arch. Sonny Echono, who said this, Thursday, in Abuja, at a two-day National Conference on Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET, explained that the development “has created a shortfall of the adequately skilled educated workforce which is one of the major constraints to the growth and development of our nation.”

The conference was organised by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Skills Development for Youth Employment, SKYE programme, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Development and implemented by the German Development Cooperation, GIZ.

“Most of the graduates produced in various universities of technology, polytechnics, colleges of education (Technical) and technical colleges nationwide do not have specific skills required for the job market (market-relevant skills).

“The situation results to having millions of Nigerian graduates that are unemployed,” he said.

Speaking at the event aimed at repositioning the technical and vocational education and training through policy and legislative options in Nigeria, Echono explained that given the situation, the present administration’s emphasis is majored on Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and skill acquisition, adding that, it was “born out of the recognition that TVET is the bedrock of socio-economic growth and development of any nation.”

Echono said, “Government at all level has been making frantic efforts to equip the youths by establishing technical colleges, polytechnics, mono-technics, Vocational Enterprise Institutions (VEIs) and Innovation Enterprise Institutions (IEIs) and Model Skills Training Centers (MSTC) for equipping youths/learners with technical and vocational skills through formal and non-formal channels across the states of the federation.”

Speaking further at the conference, tagged: “Repositioning Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) through Policy and Legislative Options” for National Development”, the Permanent Secretary explained that the “main focus of this conference is to develop synergy among the stakeholders of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Nigeria through policy and legislative options which will serve as a foundation for (TVET) development, coordination and effective implementation in Nigeria.

“There is no doubt that there is an epic gap between the skilled manpower required and that which is currently available,” he said.

According to him, “This initiative is highly welcomed by the Federal Government of Nigeria as it will further enhance the achievement of this Administration’s ‘Change mantra’ through an effective manpower development with a viable skill acquisition programme specifically in areas of technology, and other aspects of resourcefulness to enhance national development; hence the establishment of Skill Training Centers (STCs) especially now that government is making comprehensive efforts in youths skill capacity building through investment in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET).”

He commended the efforts and support of GIZ in bringing together all the stakeholders of TVET as think tanks in repositioning TVET through policy and legislative options.

“We sincerely hope that this will create a window opportunity for public and private establishments to further support and promote the development of TVET,” he added.

Speaking at the event, Head of Programme, Skills Development for Youth Employment, SKYE, Hans Ludwig Bruns, said it was the right time for all relevant stakeholders within the TVET sector to jointly work on the TVET reform process, adding, “This is needed to provide better vocational education for the young people in Nigeria”.

According to him, “Nigeria is currently facing tremendous challenges in terms of sustainable job creation and productivity.”

“The high numbers of unemployment and underemployment have become major socio-economic challenges over the past decade.

“It is connected to the issue of skills development, which is interlinked to the challenges of adjusting TVET policies, regulations, and implementation.

“It cannot be overemphasised that high quality and relevant vocational education and training is a prerequisite for economic development.

“The topic is a high priority in the reform agenda in many countries and Nigeria is not an exception.

“It is worthy to note that the Government of Nigeria has taken important steps forward in establishing the National Skills Council under the chairmanship of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with the objective to develop skills for the nation through TVET.

“However, challenges are still remaining-Public education providers need to make education and training more relevant to the demand of the private sector.

“The momentum of reform to achieve good results is now and will need rapid steps to provide quality vocational education to the high number of young people who are already or will be joining vocational education and training in the coming years,” he said.

The federal and state government should work together to restructure the educational curriculum.

The polytechnic that the federal government started in Nigeria should be converted into a university of science and technology with the school offering ND certificate and BTECH degree.

National Diploma should be for its usual 2 years.

Bachelor in Technology should replace HND and it should be for 4 years.

HND Degree should be scrapped it is not relevant anymore as Bachelor degree is what majority of bodies appreciate.

Those old student or ex-graduate of Polytechnic who are presently holding HND certificate should be made to undergo bridging programme of one or two years to get a Bachelor degree of technology.

The university of science and technology should run programme like NATIONAL DIPLOMA/BTECH in any of the underlisted courses

Barbing and Hair dressing

NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN CODING AND WEBSITE DESIGN.

BTECH IN Culinary Studies and Hospitality Services.

NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN TAILORING ( BOTH SEWING OF NATIVE WEAR AND WESTERN WEARS )

NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN WELDING AND FABRICATION

NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN TILING OF FLOOR

NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN PAINTING OF HOUSES.

NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN PLUMBING WORKS

NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN BOAT BUILDING

NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN BREWERY AND DISTILERY TECHNOLOGY

NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN FIRE FIGHTING.

If our educational system is overhaul it will go a long way in creating jobs and self employment for our graduate.

This is the first time in a long while I will agree with the Federal Government as regards Youth Unemployment. According to the report, the reason while unemployment is prevalent is that the Higher Institution has failed to teach these students specific skills required for the job market. Like I said, the other time there are some things you don't get to learn from the four walls of the school yet very sacrosanct if you're to secure a better life for yourself. We are in a DIGITAL ERA and you have to acquire DIGITAL SKILLS to stay relevant. If you are still an Undergraduate, Corper, Unemployed, Working class but want something extra do well to acquire a DIGITAL SKILLS to stay relevant. We have Copyrighting, Web Development, Web Design, SEO, SEM, Coding, Social Media ads, Affiliate Marketing etc. And the easiest to learn and start earning almost immediately is Affiliate Marketing. You might want to ask how do I get started? You are just a DM away from getting started.

Fool, making it look like it's the absence of the skill that making youths looking for job not get it, as there are millions of jobs roles waiting to be filled.
Companies are shutting down, cos of extortions, high cost of production, power . Imagine a common that runs on diesel at 340 per liter as against 240 naira that it used to be.

No system to create jobs directly or indirectly.

Npower is a direct system bt poorly executed and planned.

Improving the economy wud be an indirect system to create jobs bt they have no idea how to do that. Lol

I like this government. They have reason for every evil that’s going on in the country. Cooking gas price has sky rocketed they have a reason. Naira is devaluing they have a reason for it. Food items is almost on a daily increase they know the reason.
They only have reason why things are bad but can’t provide solutions to any.

Look I tell people that you cannot give what you do not have. The area encompassing Nigeria today has been a failed area even before the british came. Can you imagine that it is only the benin, yoruba and hausa tribes that has anything close to an empire and any sense of civilization and history. Even with all their effort, its was still mediocre compared to the europeans and asians.
Black people everywhere from Africa, the carribean, europe, the americas do not know how to build nations. We can achieve things as individuals but we do not know how to be organised and build societies. It is kinda like a Nigerian playing for germany and wins the world cup but yet his country cannot organise a group of Nigerians to do same.
Nigeria problems are thesame problems of blacks worldwide. Till we learn how to organise ourselves and be disciplined, we going no where.
