I don't just know why but some teachers tend to derive a certain kind of joy when they flog a student and the student starts crying. But when the child refuses to cry, they kinda feel intimidated and unfulfilled. It's more like they flog the child just so dey can see the child cry and not in the hope that the child will change for the better. I had one teacher then who publicly stated that he won't stop flogging if u don't cry
chariisGRACE:
Uncle Goodman, my primary 4 teacher back then in Primary school. After screaming for the owners of the names on the list of 'names of noise makers' to come out to the front of the class (I was among them of course).

Gifting us six strokes each on the palm. The girls and some boys that where not in the 'strong man' gang collected their own strokes, not without returning some screams of pain back to uncle Goodman.

For us the strong men, after investing six strokes of his cane on our palms with no ROI (crying), Uncle Goodman still flogged us for not crying.

When we cried, he still flogged us for crying.

A lady was correcting a her daughter(5-6years) and the girl was like 'sssshhhh' to her mum, meaning keep quiet.

My neighbors kids goes to school with atleast 5 pencils weekly.

That age, you need to show my dad your pencil/biro everyday. Failure to do so, you lie down on the centre table.

When i was in secondary school, moving to higher class, my dad will you give text books previously used by elder bro/sis. He will just tipex the First&Middle name, leaving the surname.

He's going to document all the textbooks given to you, so that when you're promoted to another class, you will also handover the textbooks you used for that session back to him. He will be ticking.

Also you will be given a pack of 60leaves note books + 5pens.

When you need another notebook or pen, you must show the exhausted ones.

I once asked myself, with all the iron hand we were tortured with during our child hood, how come we have a dysfunctional society?

Beating does not instill discipline on its own, it has to be aided by other methods, when you beat a kid for every inadequacies, he gets used to it and sometimes he will intentional err if he knows the enjoyment he will get from the punishable act is greater than the punishment itself.

There was a day I ran away from house. I forgot to do the assignments my dad gave me before he went out in the morning, I went out to play street football for almost 6 hours, I was exhausted, my battery was on red, I wanted to rush the assignment when my dad came, he asked for the answers but I was stuttering.

He was unleashing his bet from his trouser's bet hole , I was afraid that day because my body can't take any beating that moment, then suddenly he told me to go outside and bring a big stone so that I can carry it as punishment after I will get my beating.

when I reached outside, a divine thought came to my mind, flee!!! your body can't take the impeding punishment. And truthfully I might not survive the beating that day, I dropped the stone and ran , I stopped after I reached another neighborhood, I was there till 8pm, then I remember the rampant cases of kidnappers, I decided to trek back home . When I was some metres to my house , the neighbors were already looking for me, I could hear my mum's cries, I just had to show myself because I couldn't bear to hear her cries any further.

The neighbors were happy I came back, an elderly man told my father not to beat me again that night, one neighbor even took me in for the night because he saw the anger brewing on my dad's face.

After 23 years, I told my dad that if I had been punished that day, He might not have someone to call his only son.........we both laughed over it.
Despite all the turture and abuse we went through starting from home, school or Arabic school still our society is keeping worsening and deteriorating everyday

U didn't add, father getting home and you are met in the living room.

And being asked a question you're supposed to know and u don't know it.

When NTA shows a smart kid and ur father is comparing the child to you and just feels like making u as smart as the child at that instant by beating you

Another thing was, there was always one uncle in the street that was dedicated to beating stubborn children in the area.
Hey, go and call Kola for me, and when u hear Bro Kola is coming, u start peeing on your body. And no matter how badly you were beaten, its just to eat, bath and sleep. Small children no dey fall sick or die from any form of beating then

Undiluted truth but things are evolving now. You can't raise kids that way anymore.

Yes and that's the beginning of raising generation of SIMPle men.

Those days were the"Beating Age"...

Now it is spoiling age... since parents started to spare the rod due to excessive pressing of phone and snapping picture.

It is said "People buy things they don't need with money they don't have, to impress people they don't like"

The beating Age gave birth to the so called spoling age.Beating a child shows failure and aggression on the part of the parent to control his ward.

The Cycle of violence gave birth to present day Nigeria we have.Children are treated like slaves on a plantation during the slavery era.It is so endemic in our society that we see it as discipline. We are only creating monsters and narcissists.

The beating age created rapists, cultists, oloshos, drug addicts who now took this trend to a new dimension in the spoiling age.

Children are little humans who should be loved, cherished, leave a good legacy and taught the role of responsiblity not beaten and taught to be a willing slave.

No wonder people in domestic abuse relationshop find it difficult to leave in Nigeria.
For Nigeria to be a nation of good people we need to abandon the cycle of violence in our society. We need self love, high self esteem and help each other to heal from imprints of slavery.

That is why we have individuals who are prone to anger and violence with little self-esteem in our society today and you wonder why. Some of us were abused by our parents in the name of discipline. Our parents were abused by their own parents and the circle has been on for a long time.
Just lekwa all the insult and anger on Nairaland.!

That is why we accept mediocrity in Nigeria from our supposed elders. We have been thought to shut up and that the elder is always right and complain is tantamount to disrespect.
We get abused in the guise of lack of respect and have grown with this damaged psyche and low self-confidence and esteem. We think it is normal and we cant challenge our corrupt leaders because of the way we grew up being abused and shut down.

You see the circle of abuse and why it took a white woman and family to raise the first black US president!

The Black race is not ready to move on from the slave mentality.

They justify slave treatment as discipline until they get enough power to turn their fellow blacks into slaves.

Yet we wonder why there brutality, selfishness and corruption all over the continent.
