I beg go to the States with those ivy league schools and see the kind of absurd taxes they have one everything from soft drinks State, Federal and local taxes taxes on gas. You go bow. Just check out California then come back and report to your friends on NL.
In California, soon they will start taxing the air you breath.

Yet they are coping just fine. Did you bother to know how? The government gives back to the people and the economy. Over there paying taxes worth it cuz you see your tax directly at work. The economy is that good that I can work three jobs a week and I get paid per hour. What does your country have to offer me? Or do you wanna see my per head tax? What do I get in return?

Many developed countries have taxes on their soft drinks too.

Canada : some provinces eg BC tax soft drinks.

USA: some cities and states tax soft drinks

Europe: many European countries eg France, the UK...tax sugary drinks.
Nigeria is joining a long list of countries that collect tax on sugary drinks.

Which US are you talking about? The same one we buy any soft drink (soda) at Costco for $13 per 36 cans pack. Do maths and you can see that soft drinks are even cheaper in the US.

Wonder why this government sees the masses as their only means of raising funds. What happened to cutting the cost of governance in addition to to reducing/eliminating wastes in the system?

The masses are experiencing tremendous hardship, why squeeze them more?

We can cut waste, and we should...but Nigeria isn't earning enough money in the first place..which is why the waste and stealing affects us badly..they are stealing from a poor treasury.

Plus most people don't drink soft drinks on a regular basis. Unless you are middle or upper class, you will not take soft drinks on a daily basis. Maybe once a month...or less.

The fact that she is paying 350k and not 2million or more as in other climes is why I say health care is subsided in Nigeria

In a private hospital, the deposit would start at 500000 naira or more. (some may even take a million)..and that's just the begining.

A CS in Nigeria costs less than 2000 dollars. In the US, it's 15000 dollars or more.

If she was on NHIS, it would have cut the cost a bit even.

It is also why we have bad care in government hospitals as subsides prevent profits being made....
A CS in US $15k and you think the poor can afford that without Medicaid? You are told what %age the government is paying for you. That's what real subsidy is and not what you think we have here and that's the kind of place government is concerned when you become obsessed because it takes money from their pocket. In Nigeria where mortality rate is high for the poor, what has the government being doing. Government hospitals won't take you in unless you pay bills first and you are here talking about subsidy.

Going by the reason for the excise duty...to fund health sector is non sensical...
The last time I checked, healthcare isn't free in Nigeria...the citizens pay for it
I stand to be corrected,no government hospital will treat one for diabetes free of charge..
U can only discourage people from taking excess sugar if the govt is directly responsible for their treatment- which is not what we have now..
Carbonated drinks are not addictive beverages...
Impose 500% import tax on addictive beverages like cigarettes to discourage it's consumption...make a stick of cigarette sell for N200....u LL raise revenue cos chain smokers will still buy grin
Not Coke and fanta

Buhari is looking for the best possible means to repay Chinese loan. The problem is that the man is too old to lead so won't even know it when his cabinet members re-loot taxpayers money meant to repay the loan. undecided

Did Nigerian in the streets encourage him to take Chinese loan.

Now he is busy taxing southeners at the tail end of his government.

Foolishly some political leaders in the south are still fronting for northern President to continue after President Buhari.
Re: Coke, Fanta Prices To Increase As FG Imposes N10/litre Excise Duty On Carbonated by wink2015(m): 11:17pm On Jan 05, 2022
ALL THIS TAX REGIME IS DIRECTED AT SOUTHERNERS.

The Loan Buhari took from china and other international countries was meant to be used for the development of the core north or made available to be stolen to cushion the interest of the northern political leaders.

The south was meant to labour to pay the money foolishly borrowed by President Buhari government.

Its the same reason given by many governments who have brought in such taxes.

Plus , soft drinks cause a lot of health problems, like obesity, diabetes etc...which put a strain on government and your pocket.

For more reasons why see this WHO paper on the matter
Yes, but this is not the main reason Nigerian govt is imposing it. If the govt gives health benefits or gives aid for critical conditions, then we can say that reason is genuine.

Can't we copy the good thing by being in the league of the most developed nations of the world in infrastructure, education, agric etc. When it comes to inflicting the masses, we are quick to justify it by quoting developed nations of implementing same law?

I'm not against Nigeria taxing soft drinks but knowing that the money earned will be looted and not used to better the life of the people, who now pay more for soft drinks cos the producers will simply pass it down to consumers.... Is worrisome.

All of the countries you mention provide quality, accountable and commensurate services for the taxes they receive but here, they just want more money and zero responsibility.
You would think this drives for more income would start from cutting the cost of governance but no, they still want to maintain their lavish spending and high earnings but while they aggressively shrink the disposal income of the people
