Presid. Obasanjo raids and shuts Insider Weekly - a news magazine critical of him.

The authorities raided a weekly newsmagazine known for its strong criticism of President Olusegun Obasanjo, arresting three staff members and shutting down the publication, employees said. ''They've taken away our computers and files and locked up the office,'' said Danlami Nmodu, an editor of the Lagos-based magazine, Insider Weekly. ''We have had to go underground like we did when we were under military rule.'' The country's State Security Service said the weekend raid was conducted in the interest of ''national security.''

Chinua Achebe blames President Obasanjo for the worsening condition of Nigeria, rejects national award

World-famous Nigerian author Chinua Achebe has rejected an award from his home country, criticising the "dangerous" state of affairs.

"The situation is getting worse and worse," he told the BBC, saying that President Olusegun Obasanjo bears primary responsibility.

Achebe's most famous book, Things Fall Apart, has sold some 11 million copies around the world.

Nigeria is Africa's major oil producer but two-thirds of the people are poor.

'Lawless fiefdom'

"Nigeria is a country that does not work," he said: "Schools, universities, roads, hospitals, water, the economy, security, life."

There was a four-day national strike last week over a rise in fuel prices, while more than 10,000 people have been killed in communal clashes since Mr Obasanjo was elected in 1999.

Achebe told the BBC's Network Africa programme that he hoped that rejecting the Commander of the Federal Republic - Nigeria's second highest honour - would serve as a "wake-up call".

He also said that he hoped the recent wave of strikes and protests would continue until there is "change".

A special advisor to President Obasanjo, Femi Fani-Kayode, told the BBC that Achebe had the right to reject the award.

But he said the author had lost touch with some of the events in Nigeria during time spent abroad and said a lot of progress had been made since President Obasanjo came to power, with fewer living in poverty.

In his two-page letter about rejecting the honour, published in Nigerian newspapers, Achebe was most scathing about the situation in his home state of Anambra in the south-east.

"A small clique of renegades, openly boasting its connections in high places, seems determined to turn my homeland into a bankrupt and lawless fiefdom."

Anambra state governor Chris Ngige was last year kidnapped and forced to write a resignation letter at gun-point.

Informative thread.

It is sad though - Nigeria once called "The Black Hope" is now a laughing stock and an example of not how to run a country. Notice that most of the good news articles here are about sport. Ha! Even that has gone downhill.

From where do we start to clean up? How seemingly hopeless!

Anyway, still reading....

^ Thank you madam.

You would find that good sporting performances goes hand in hand with good government. Abacha's govt's achievements in sports is a testament to his good governance which many people forget because of the malicious and unjust campaign to discredit and demonise him after he was poisoned by enemies of Nigeria.

BTW I love your thread about visions of a developed Nigeria.

Obasanjo admits to sudden stupendous wealth

Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo has for the first time publicly declared the income from his private farm in the south-west.

A spokesman for the president said he was earning 30 million Naira ($250,000) a month from his farm in Otta.

Mr Obasanjo had made the public declaration to quell rumours that he was stealing money from the Nigerian state, the spokesman said.

Africa's major oil producer is ranked among the world's most corrupt nations.

Despite the oil wealth, the majority of the population lives on less than $1 a day.
