Common sense should have told you that he took such drastic actions to put fear into his mom so she will tell him.Afterall the Bible tells us that only the violence taketh it by force. And for you asking if that should be his priority also means you too doesn't know your biological father and you don't give a damn about it which is good for you. Since you don't see knowing your biological father as a priority,he does.so respect his decesion.
