ACF TACKLES AKEREDOLU ON SOUTHERN PRESIDENCY, SAYS CONSTITUTION MUST PREVAIL

The pan-northern socio-political organisation, the Arewa Consultative Forum, on Wednesday, came hard on Ondo State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), for declaring that any political party that fielded a northern candidate in the 2023 presidential election would lose.

The group argued that the governor, being a senior legal practitioner, should know better when it comes to electing anyone to occupy the nation’s coveted seat.

The governor, while receiving members of a group, the Power Rotation Movement, led by the Chairman, Pogu Bitrus, who also doubles as the Chairman, Middle Belt Forum, said the 17 governors in the southern part of the country were determined to ensure that the next President comes from the South.

However, the ACF, through its National Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Yawe, drew the attention of the governor to the constitutional provisions for the emergence of a president in the country.

The ACF’s spokesman in an interview with The PUNCH in Kaduna said, “Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) should know that any presidential candidate, who intends to win the seat, needs votes from 24 states and not 17 (South) and 19 (North). That is what the constitution says.

“As a very senior lawyer, Governor Akeredolu should know the provisions of the constitution. It is, therefore, not possible for a group of states to come together and say we must produce the president. Anybody eyeing that seat must traverse the country, the North and the South to meet the demands of the constitution.”

Also, a former Secretary-General of the ACF, Anthony Sani, reminded the governor that no zone could produce the nation’s president on its own.

Sani noted that for that reason, the zones must collectively produce the president to ensure the unity of the nation.

The former ACF scribe, while speaking to our correspondent in Kaduna on Wednesday, maintained that threats and intimidation were not part of democratic ethos that could produce a president.

He said, “I hope those who claim fielding a northerner or southerner as presidential candidate for 2023, depending on who’s speaking, are aware of the import of the provisions in the constitution that before one emergences as a president, he must meet two important requirements to wit; secure the majority of votes, and spread by garnering at least 25 per cent of the votes in at least two thirds of the states of the federation, put currently at 24 states.

“Since none of the regions has 24 states, it means none can produce the president with its own votes alone.

“The intention of such provisions is to force political parties and their candidates to go round the whole country and canvass votes. That way, they will interact and break barriers in order to meet the requirements of not only the majority, but also of spread.

“Those who drafted the constitution deliberately made it impossible for a region to use its own votes alone to produce the president.”

“The regions must meet in order to produce the president and further the unity of the nation. So, political parties and candidates are expected to use their campaigns to enable their victory in the elections instead of resorting to threats and intimidation that are not part of the democratic ethos to produce the president.”

Mumu ACF, stop twisting Aketi's statement. Baba didn't stop you from contesting; he does not even have any constitutional power to do so. He only gave words of advice to any northerners still nursing 2023 ambition to wait for their time. This is the turn of the south. Is that too much for him to say? In almost 62 years of our existence as a country, North has been in power for over 45 years, is that fair enough?

After they have ruled for a greater period of our national life with nothing to show for it except suppression, oppression and retrogression? Imagine these are the same people/region that foist the present catastrophe on a nation of 200M people twice.

The orthodox Nigerian constitution only make sense to these brutes only when they desperately need political power to subjugate others, but after that the Sharia law is their primary legal dictate.

In the 1999, 2003, the ACF forgets the constitution when zoning was agreed upon by all politicians in the country so that peace can reign n every region can rule n have a sense of belonging. ...
Now the northern 8 year rules is coming to an end and power would shift south, they are now claiming constitution and number.....going by the real census figures, do the north still feel they are the largest in Nigeria?
It's just laughable......the north controls everything in Nigeria from fuel to military yet find it greedy to relinquish some of these powers to its southern brothers. When the south says we don't want again, let's divide, they will be the first to shout one Nigeria. ..
Nonsense people!

Nigeria is so polarized. It is this quota system that produced PMB. We dont need quota government again. Let the best hands available rule. Once we shift emphasis from North and South, Muslim and Christianity to proven competence and hold leaders accountable in that respect, we are there. This noise about Region and Religion is counterproductive.

Did they forget the constitution after Obasanjo and Jonathan's administration? It's the turn of Southern Nigeria to Rule - South East to be precise.

If not, let's just revert to the regional government. This 'Federal' Government na scam.

I keep laughing at those who thinks that the north will just hand power to the south like handing over an akara ball to a kid cheesy
power is very sweet and comes with alot of advantages if not the likes of Paul Biya would have handed over to another person long ago.
you can't taste power and still remain the same or willingly hand it over.
one of the laws of power is that it's taken and not given.
you don't expect the north to willingly dish out the only thing that kept them in line with South just like that.
without power the north is nothing and irrelevant and also years behind the south.
they knew this that's why they've been doing everything possible to hold on to it.
to crown it all, the south does not even have what it takes to wrestle power from the north no thanks to the disunity among them.
as it stands now, the chances of a northerner becoming president in 2023 is even higher than a southerner.
have you wondered why both party are yet to zone their tickets?
it's because they're still studying the situation on ground.
Apc won't like to zone their ticket to the south knowing fully well Pdp is going north because no matter how you put it, no southern candidate will defeat any Northern candidate in the north irrespective of party, forget the media noise.
in 2019 Atiku polled 12 million votes and was defeated by buhari who is more popular than him in the north.
tell me any southern candidate that'll defeat Atiku in the north or Kwankwaso even Tambuwal will Trash any southern candidate in the north.
with all the media noise, Tinubu struggled to win his Lagos, won Osun his hometown with the help of daylight rigging.
Osinbajo lost his polling unit in APC state even as a VP
so with all these, you guys think Apc will risk its ticket to these two?
Apc is still calculating their moves because if eventually Pdp goes north, trust me they might return to power.
lol one thing the north understand is politics of no party but northern interests.
Southern disunity is an advantage of the North.

2023 is still unpredictable but one thing I know is that North has the higher chances of retaining the presidency than the south.

We the southerners are getting it wrong honestly, politics is not all about threatening or issues some undiplomatic statement it’s all about consultations and having a mutual agreement. Abiola won in Bashir tofa home state, Obasanjo won by landslide in Kano even Goodluck won by huge and wide margin in some states in NW and NE in 2011 no northerners issues this kind of statements. I don’t knw wat is so hard in meeting the core northerners and diffuse ideas with them, I don’t support this kind of statement. At the end, they will say zoning is not recognized in Nigerian constitution and they av the numbers, statement like this will be suspicious to power broker up there hin the north. I knw some people will say let break and scatter everything but if Nigeria didn’t survive for good 48hrs most of the kids here won’t even remember NL. It’s all about bilateral agreements, consultations and mutual understanding.
