Compared to the USA, Russia does not have the same 'safety' the US has.

The US is bordered by Canada to the North (which has always been friendly to the US, even not batting an eye when someone leaked a US plan to invade Canada several decades ago...) and Mexico (which has been run by pro-US governments since the 1930's.). And two oceans.

Russia is bordered by the growing EU, and by several nations allied to the USA, or planning to be allied to the USA and the EU on the west, and to the East, is bordered kind of by Japan (who beat them in 1905 in war) and is not too far from South Korea (whose army is under US command. Yes, the US Army can overrule the South korean government on its own defence matters theoretically) China, while friendly for now, has fought with the Russians in the past.

Most of the recent invasions of Russia have come from the West, thus Russia takes good care of its western borders.Over the years it has done that by installing friendly governments, or in some cases taking over and running the countries (what do Finland, Poland, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Laatvia, Lithuania...have in common...? They were once Russian colonies)

Nowadays, most of the countries to the west, apart from Belarus, are run by Western friendly governments. In the event of an invasion, Russia cannot count on them as allies.

Hence the saber rattling on Ukraine. Let's not forget...Ukraine used to be run by Russian friendly governments till the Orange revolution of some ten years ago. THings have been tense since.
