Why Tinubu believes he can be Next President of Nigeria

By Soibi Versatile

The period for elections and campaigns are drawing near again as Nigeria Africa’s most popular nation prepares to vote who will lead the helm of their affairs in various capacities.

Candidates far and wide have expressed interest in various positions available for contest already with the post of the Presidency the most coveted in the country. Primaries have not be held but some big names in the top parties APC and PDP have signalled intentions to via for the position of the President.

The issue of zoning has been brought up by both parties but it is still very unclear what system will be adopted eventually. In the last 7 years the nation has been steered by Gen Muhammadu Buhari of the APC, a northerner which is why the South have demanded for the zoning of the Presidency to the South for equity sake.

Chairman of the Nigerian Governor’s Forum for the South Rotimi Akereolodu has said that the South must produce the next President. This statement has been backed as well by the Governor of Rivers State Nyesom Wike.

The South counts for a significant chunk of Nigeria’s revenue with the oil fields in the nation situated in that region. However it is a complex decision as which part of the South will be allowed to rule the nation as the South East have been the loudest about being marginalised since the Biafran war something they feel is an evidence that the talk of ” one Nigeria ” is a mere charade. Agitations have been the order of the day with the leader of IPOB Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in detention.

Former Secretary to the Federal Government Sen Ayim Pius Ayim who is from the South East has said he would contest.
But more of the candidates who have declared are from the South West with the biggest of names Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former Senator and then later Governor of Lagos State the most renowned. Tinubu who may face stiff competition in the primaries from his compatriot from Lagos State Prof
Yemi Osibanjo who is the current Vice President and one of his political sons has said that it was his dream to be President of Nigeria. Many have reacted to Tinubu’s declaration with sharp contrast bringing up his God fatherism tendencies as a possible hitch in his ambitions.

Tinubu a major political force in the South West and a king maker. Tinubu who played a massive role in the amalgamation of the APC and the emergence of President Buhari in the 2014 primaries is also infamous for acquiring excessive properties for himself with the use of public funds during his era as Governor of Lagos and this could make him an unlikely option for the All Progressive Congress as they may find it hard convincing Nigerians to vote for a candidate with a controversial record however that assumption is debatable given the reputation of the previous Presidents and then our current President Muhammadu Buhari.

Tinubu’s health has also been called into question with reports about a possible health issue circulating due to his frequent trips abroad and also his age which by no means can be described as young. Tinubu’s official age stands at 69.

Allegations Against President Buhari in 2015

° Buhari is an Islamic Fundamentalists

The 80 year old was labelled an Islamic Fundamentalists for supporting the implementation of Sharia Law. Buhari had in the past called for it to be decreed a request that stirred the South angry.

° Buhari is an Ethnic Jingoist

President Muhammadu Buhari had often shown ethnic sentiments in his career. He infamously jailed the former Vice President Late Alex Ekweme in Kirikiri prison after the 1983 coup and placed the President Alhaji Shehu Shagari on house arrest, a decision that led late Fela Kuti to sing the song which had the lines ” Driver get accident, you jail conductor “

° Buhari has no certificate

The issue of Buhari’s qualifications was one of the themes of the criticism he faed as the President could not tender a copy of his Waec Results. Buhari is perceived as illiterate by many.

° Buhari is Corrupt

Buhari’s Corruption reputation may be a doubt for many but the missing 2.8 billion Naira under his watch as petroleum Minister far back doesn’t do well for his reputation

° Buhari is Undemocratic

President Muhammadu Buhari a former military head of state was accused of being Undemocratic.
While contesting against the PDP in 2011 President Buhari was labelled as unelectable due to his undemocratic tendencies according to Kaduna State Governor Nasir El Rufai.

° Buhari is too Old

Former Governor of Ekiti State Ayo Fayose in 2014 had said that at 62 President Olusegun Obasanjo was called baba and that he wondered what Nigerians would call a 74 year old President.

Tinubu’s Case for Presidency

In a statement during his declaration Tinubu said

“We have struggled for democracy and today we have democracy but we are not stable yet. By now we should have a good farming system and opportunities to produce for other nations to buy.

“We chose democracy and we must not fail in this task. I’m in this race to renew the hope and make the future great for our children .

“For Nigeria to stand united and develop, we require patience and wisdom. We have to be united, that is the only way we can be great. That was why we formed APC based on principles.

” I want to tell you that Nigeria needs serious change. I knew how Lagos was when I took over and we had never failed any election”

Tinubu’s Achievements as Governor of Lagos State

1. Tinubu instituted of a reform plan that greatly improved the welfare of judicial officers including magistrates

2. He revamped the civil and criminal procedure rule as well as creation of the Citizens Mediation Centre; a well-staffed and independent Office of the Public Defender, offering legal services for the poor.

3. He established additional 5 general hospitals in Lagos state

4. He upgraded facilities at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH)

5. He provided free healthcare services including free ante-natal care for women, free eye treatments and free glasses, popularly called ‘JIGI BOLA’.

6. He pioneered the Bus Rapid Transit System and LAGBUS

7. He established the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)

8. Reference of at least 13 matters related to the principle of federalism to be tested by the Supreme Court

9. Tinubu created 37 Local Council Development Areas

10. He spear-headed the political merger that produced the APC.

If there is one thing Bola Ahmed Tinubu has learned from Buhari’s emergence is that anything is possible. The PDP had circulated various documentaries warning Nigerians of a possible consequence of a Buhari victory yet he was able to win. Tinubu also knows the Nigerian electorate can easily be swayed by money, personal interest and more. In election queues some take a meagre N1000 just to vote for a candidate and primaries can be swayed by the man with the biggest bucks and for him money is not a problem.

Tinubu also knows Nigerians would be better off with him having had a disastrous last 7 years where inflation and insecurity had ravaged the nation.

Tinubu knows he is imperfect and that Nigerians do not trust him but same was said of others who won. Tinubu knows he is ageing and may not be very effective but he has seen others older and with worse health conditions win. Tinubu knows the odds are high against him but had seen others with bigger disadvantages win.

Tinubu knows his dream of becoming President may be short-lived but he knows Nigerians and their tendency to choose the lesser evil of the two or even so their ethnic sentiments in voting. Tinubu may not be everyone’s candidate or the best man for the job but the truth is an Ahmed Bola Tinubu Presidency is on the cards and I beg Nigerians not to rule it out. Tinubu is in the Presidential race because he knows he can be Nigeria’s next President.

See how all those allegations against Buhari turned out to be true, but Nigerian will still mock you saying "Shebi he is still your president grin grin ", shining their teeth like dehydrated camels.

As if we are all not witnessing all these things come to pass.

Everything is just a joke to you Nigerians.

What do you expect?
That a renowned crook like Tinubu could even muster the temerity to aspire for presidency tells all the story of a pathetic 3rd-world country on the verge of complete collapse.
It goes to show how badly governance standard has been lowered and how rotten our value system is.

If a man that has ceaselessly looted Lagos State for over 23 years yet unable to build a single hospital good enough to treat himself could still manage to find some deranged youth promoting his 2023 ambition, do we need a soothsayer to tell us where Nigeria is headed?
grin
