They did not "defeat" the USA. Just like Afghanistan, USA supported one side of the war with weapons and air support. When their legislation decided that America was wasting too much resources in the war, they pull out of the country and North defeated South in few months. Just as what happened in Afghanistan.

Any country that will face USA in a war is gone.

Note: Even during the war, American soldiers who killed some civillians were arrested and sentenced to prison in America. They never attacked civillians. Same can't be said about Russia.

You are the one who dont understand history by saying USA couldn't capture Vietnam.
In a war of of insurgency, how do you define civilians let alone measure their deaths.

Civilian deaths were partly caused by assassinations, massacres, and terror tactics. Civilian deaths were also caused by mortar and artillery, extensive aerial bombing and the use of firepower in military operations conducted in heavily populated areas.
Many Viet Cong were actually civilians and not regular soldiers. Anyone who took up arms against US soldiers could rightly be regarded as enemies.
