You are right that Jesus Christ was not Himself a Christian this since He lived His life in submission and obedience of the Old Covenant Law of Moses. However, Jesus Christ taught to His followers a new and different doctrine to follow, God's New Covenant Law and Truth in the Kingdom of God, and those who live their lives in submission to and obedience of Jesus Christ's own Teachings( and commandments) are His followers aka Christians with Jesus Christ, the Christ in the word Christian.
