How much of the gas are we using locally?
Re: Nigeria Seeking Funding For Gas Pipeline To Morocco by aribisala0(m): 1:01pm On May 03, 2022
We import so many things we could make with our gas at home e.g. Ceramic products and other building materias. Such manufacturing will create jobs whilst gas exporting would export those jobs

Meanwhile we have been signing 10 year gas deals that tie us in to one price for 10 years no matter what is happening in the market and arbitration of any dispute is NOT in African courts but European ones.
Who the gas dey epp?

Anytime we hear big project we get excited foolishly

It is only good if it is a Nigerian company headquartered in Nigeria doing it

Huge and stupid?

We are still cooking with kerosine and Firewood and think the best thing to do is export gas.

When we export gas we export our children's future and jobs
Let us ask a simple question

What do those countries that buy our gas do with it and what do we buy from them in return

Google
List of top gas consuming countries you will find the top world economies

What we need to invest in is our capacity to distribute and use gas INSIDE Nigeria

That money should go on gas power plants in Nigeria and not gas pipelines for export.
Last year we made less than a billion USD from gas.

When that gas reaches Europe it would be retailed for much more(we lose)
It will contribute a lot more to their GDP and used in products which we then end up importing e.g. fertilizers(we lose again)

Among the most energy intensive products are
Basic Chemicals( Germany is one of the leading producers)
Steel
Cement
Foods e.g chocolates,beverages,tobacco
Paper
plastics
Glass
Aluminium
ALL products that we import a lot

All products we have no business importing

Strategically we should focus on using our energy for Value Addition

Does it make sense for us to

Sell cassava to anyone and then buy gari in return?

But FOR DECADES

we are buying petrol and diesel

We should not compound that folly by

putting our money into pipelines for gas to Europe

We can never get a fair price for it and we should focus on using it to boost our own economy

Let us aim to be a world leader in Glass and fertilizer . We have everything needed for that. Why export it?

Rather les us offer free or very cheap gas for 10 years for companies to come and open manufacturing plants

Glass is a big deal not gas
There is growing glass market of $120 billion worldwide, growing fertilizer market, growing steel and cement market

That should be our focus
Come on!
We have excess for export and domestic use.
Inasmuch as I agree that we develop the sector domestically, there's nothing wrong in building international pipelines and exporting gas to Europe.
Apart from crude oil, natural gas has the potential to boost our foreign reserve. We need to export all we can export.
It's a welcome development.

Exactly

The same way they will dump us when it suits

We have been struggling with terrorism in West Africa since THEY uprooted Gaddafi

Have they helped us ?

But in two months they have found billions for Ukraine

We better wake up and figure out how to use gas more

Some Nairaland anti-Russia and anti-Pittin will not like this news.

No forward thinking people would put it like this. Russia will soon lose its market share of gas exports because European countries would no longer buy their gas. So Russia will go to the Nigerians who do not think. Offer to help them build their gas pipeline to supply Europe. The Nigerians will then give Russian gas giant Gazprom contract to build a gas pipeline to Europe. Gazprom a Russian company will sabotage the pipeline. Take money from Nigeria and make sure the pipeline never supplies gas to Europe

We do not have any for domestic use. Nothing significant compared to need
To use it domestically we need investment in infrastructure. As long as that infrastructure does not exist and we are cooking with kerosine it is self deception to say we have excess. That infrastructure costs money and should BE PRIORITIZED over export infrastructure. If you do not get that you will never get anything

This is not about right or wrong but priority and interest
You talk about boosting foreign reserve as if that is a virtue? Does US boost foreign reserve? That is not their concern They sell their gas in their own currency .Why? because we are reserving in their currencyas is the rest of the world .So demand for dollar is always high
Boosting foreign reserves is not a pointless thing it must have a reason and that is to pay for imports . So if we can reduce imports WHICH WE CAN then boosting foreign reserves is an academic exercise. As we have learnt from The Ukraine war . Dollar based foreign reserves can be sanctioned For any reason the US can cook up . We do not need limitless foreign reserves rather we need to improve our balance of trade and domicile surplus in OUR OWN banks

No currency has intrinsic value. It is all down to demand and supply.
So the idea of "boosting foreign reserves" come from a colonized mindset. That is because we manufacture nothing and import everything
If we reverse that trend our own currency can become a reserve currency too.
Colonized minds will never envision that.
The other strategic consideration is if we decide to enter energy intensive sectors of the World Economy then those we sell gas
to are our competitors. If they cannot get cheap gas then they MIGHT be forced to shift production to our country. As long as cheap gas is an option that will not happen.

Finally your projection about boosting foreign reserves is weak

How much exactly are we talking about . Gas is very cheap and from our perspective at current prices is not worth selling .
Let it stay in the ground. Last year how much did we make from gas sales abroad?

Well, if you think you want to spite the EU whilst letting a great opportunity like this one slip away, you are spiting yourself too.
See what the Indians are doing with Russia.
These guys are taking advantage of the situation by getting the already cheap Russian oil at even cheaper rates, shunning all consequences that might come from the West.

The idea of the pipeline was conceived long ago(April 2019), before the Ukrainian crisis but largely docile because Russia has been filling the space. Now, there is a political will to have it done from European investors.
The project was estimated to cost 90.1m USD to be splitted 50-50 by Nigeria and Morocco.

Germany's economy is based on cheap Russian gas. If that disappears they will struggle .Why should we help them when we could benefit.
Next to China Germany is the second largest producer or glass.

Why can't that be us?

Will that be us if we sell them cheap gas because we cannot use it?

The way to think about it is this

There are some industries where energy costs are a very significant proportion of overall cost
We need those industries in West Africa to stop our young people drowning in the Mediterranean

The moment we start to conceive Germany as taking away our children's future the moment our eyes open forever
I would extend the same argument to crude oil

We should aim to export refined products only.

The market is there in West Africa and beyond
That is the only way to create jobs : boosting energy consumption to industrialize our country

Absolutely correct. Nigeria is a failed state. There's need for a genuine leader who will competently and consistently start turning things around in Nigeria in 2023 otherwise its doom for the nation.

Dangote's fertilizer plant is gas based
There is space for more fertilizer plants still. The truth is these countries are very smart and interest focussed.
Even if you offer free gas they might still not come

We need more home grown Dangote's in Fertilizer, glass, ceramics, Plastics, paper, industrial chemicals

These sectors use loads of energy and manufacturing in Nigeria will be advantageous but foreign companies are swayed by national interests otherwise why is there no Shell, Mobil or Chevron major refinery in Nigeria?

We need our own multinationals on the same scale as Dangote

You're being a idealist.
I admire your "uncolonized" mindset though grin your optimism too; Naira can become a foreign reserve undecided
Excerpts from your submission;
That is because we manufacture nothing and import everything
That infrastructure costs money and should BE PRIORITIZED over export infrastructure.
If they cannot get cheap gas then they MIGHT be forced to shift production to our country.

All coming from your "uncolonized" mind.
We barely produce a thing, we import everything where do we get the money to "Prioritize" the infrastructure if we don't export our natural resources? Or would you rather have us borrow like we've been doing?
You use what you have to build what you don't have. Common sense!

And talking about "forcing" investors to shift production to our country as if we're the only country with natural gas grin You see how idealistic you are. You seem to be out of touch with reality.
