When the trains were commissioned I knew there’d be severe security repercussions.
Now you haven’t handled the security crisis in Nigeria you want to lay pipelines that will be blown up.

We are not ready in this country

Huge and stupid?

We are still cooking with kerosine and Firewood and think the best thing to do is export gas.

When we export gas we export our children's future and jobs
Let us ask a simple question

What do those countries that buy our gas do with it and what do we buy from them in return

Google
List of top gas consuming countries you will find the top world economies

What we need to invest in is our capacity to distribute and use gas INSIDE Nigeria

That money should go on gas power plants in Nigeria and not gas pipelines for export.
Last year we made less than a billion USD from gas.

When that gas reaches Europe it would be retailed for much more(we lose)
It will contribute a lot more to their GDP and used in products which we then end up importing e.g. fertilizers(we lose again)

Among the most energy intensive products are
Basic Chemicals( Germany is one of the leading producers)
Steel
Cement
Foods e.g chocolates,beverages,tobacco
Paper
plastics
Glass
Aluminium
ALL products that we import a lot

All products we have no business importing

Strategically we should focus on using our energy for Value Addition

Does it make sense for us to

Sell cassava to anyone and then buy gari in return?

But FOR DECADES

we are buying petrol and diesel

We should not compound that folly by

putting our money into pipelines for gas to Europe

We can never get a fair price for it and we should focus on using it to boost our own economy

Let us aim to be a world leader in Glass and fertilizer . We have everything needed for that. Why export it?

Rather les us offer free or very cheap gas for 10 years for companies to come and open manufacturing plants

Glass is a big deal not gas
There is growing glass market of $120 billion worldwide, growing fertilizer market, growing steel and cement market

That should be our focus
Now that we're not exporting the gas, aren't you still using firewood to cook while you burn away billions of dollars in flares?

Developing local gas infrastructure is important, and developing capacity to export the flared gases is also extremely important.

Sylva said on Monday that the pipeline would be an extension of a structure that had been pumping gas from southern Nigeria to Benin, Togo and Ghana since 2010.

So there is a structure that does this already in Nigeria , and we are still borrowing?

Who needs the gas pipeline, Nigeria or Morocco, why are we the one seeking the fund?

This.

I will not allow for this to happen. I know where they intend on getting the gas from, and it's from our land.

So because Nigeria has a pipeline to Benin republic, does it automatically mean the revenue must be sufficiently large enough to fund our budget?.... A

We the Nigeria citizens can actually fund this project by being share holders but is Nigeria Government policies system transparent to rewards us accordingly This is kind of project that can lift a country out from poverty.

yes I agree, but we need to open nigeria up to the outside world, we need to cooperate with the EU, nigeria needs to be self reliant in energy and many parts but we can't do that without cooperation of the EU,UK,US, ASIA , so we also need to capitalize on becoming a world global distributor of gas like Russia, we need to be bold enough to step into those shoes,

No forward thinking people would put it like this. Russia will soon lose its market share of gas exports because European countries would no longer buy their gas. So Russia will go to the Nigerians who do not think. Offer to help them build their gas pipeline to supply Europe. The Nigerians will then give Russian gas giant Gazprom contract to build a gas pipeline to Europe. Gazprom a Russian company will sabotage the pipeline. Take money from Nigeria and make sure the pipeline never supplies gas to Europe

You are so on point. I was shocked when Sylvia said they had discussion with Russians on the pipeline project.

Some of these people leading us in this country are not even fit to head a primary school class.

Germany's economy is based on cheap Russian gas. If that disappears they will struggle .Why should we help them when we could benefit.
Next to China Germany is the second largest producer or glass.

Why can't that be us?

Will that be us if we sell them cheap gas because we cannot use it?

The way to think about it is this

There are some industries where energy costs are a very significant proportion of overall cost
We need those industries in West Africa to stop our young people drowning in the Mediterranean

The moment we start to conceive Germany as taking away our children's future the moment our eyes open forever
I would extend the same argument to crude oil

We should aim to export refined products only.

The market is there in West Africa and beyond
That is the only way to create jobs : boosting energy consumption to industrialize our country
And when the dust is settled, Germany may even return to cheap Russian gas, so what will be Nigeria's faith? Nigeria better wake up, I'll rather start by local consumption and supply to West Africa...

Fantastic insight !!........... it is like a farmer eating all of his harvests and when it's time to replant he goes borrowing to buy seedlings! My heart bleeds when I see the deprivation our Nigerian children have to endure at the hands of our clueless politicians, in less than one generation we have seen the complete "almajirization" of Nigeria. It beats me hollow that Northerners who 'diss' education have been at the helm of affairs of educating the next generation of Nigerians...............................we are in a sorry mess! Bill Gates gave us the expo.......invest in the education and health of your people first!

Let's be very clear. There's no such thing as a Nigeria gas deposit. What we have is a huge gas deposit in the Southeast and South-south regions of Nigeria at an 80/20 ratio. Southeast Nigeria owns and harbors 80 percent gas deposits in this contraption, and some people tell you they are persona non grata in Aso Rock.

We go see!.

The gas is going through the coast of Lagos to the West African gas pipeline already supplying Ghana, Benin republic, and Togo and then to Tangiers in Morocco.
All through underwater gas pipeline.
It's far away from the north and it's troubles.

That is why I favour this project over the Nigeria-Niger republic-algeria pipeline that is going through the Sahel.
That one is right in boko and iswap territory.

40% of Nigeria's exported gas goes to Europe as Liquified gas.
We are already doing it.

But it is not good enough if we want to export the required volume of gas that can meet Europe needs and replace Russia.

Pipeline is still the unbeatable way to transport gas.

Exactly

The same way they will dump us when it suits

We have been struggling with terrorism in West Africa since THEY uprooted Gaddafi

Have they helped us ?

But in two months they have found billions for Ukraine

We better wake up and figure out how to use gas more

You need to quit spreading ignorance in the public space. What is it your Nigeria offers the world that the world should fall over themselves for you?.

Have you prudently or equitably managed your limited resources to your people's benefit?. Please do not mention Nigeria and Ukraine in the same breath. The people I find is that most people who comment here are illiterate in regards to what really obtains beyond our borders.

Ukraine has been good to its people. This country is responsible for a third of the world's wheat exports. If the crops fail in Ukraine for a planting season, you will kiss your vegetable oil goodbye. You can't even feed yourself in Nigeria.

But more important in the face of Russia's war on Ukraine, the west must support Ukraine against a narcissist aggressor who has been angling to impose its failed self on its neighbors to assuage its feeling of an inferiority complex against an obviously superior west and NATO.

If Russia is not cut to size in Ukraine, we will have a different to live in one year from today.

You're being a idealist.
I admire your "uncolonized" mindset though grin your optimism too; Naira can become a foreign reserve undecided
Excerpts from your submission;
That is because we manufacture nothing and import everything
That infrastructure costs money and should BE PRIORITIZED over export infrastructure.
If they cannot get cheap gas then they MIGHT be forced to shift production to our country.

All coming from your "uncolonized" mind.
We barely produce a thing, we import everything where do we get the money to "Prioritize" the infrastructure if we don't export our natural resources? Or would you rather have us borrow like we've been doing?
You use what you have to build what you don't have. Common sense!

And talking about "forcing" investors to shift production to our country as if we're the only country with natural gas grin You see how idealistic you are. You seem to be out of touch with reality.

As in I'm even shocked the way people agrees to that post. The man is talking as if the money is already there, all that's just left is a stroke of pen. In as much as we want to increase local distribution so also we should enhance our export. And which better customer can we sell to if not those in Europe. How many gas will our west African buy or can afford. Even the Nigeria market here is it profitable?
We have more than enough to export and for domestic use. All those industries mentioned requires money and this is an avenue to make such money. Nigeria is a very poor country and until we find a way to increase our IGR all those things mentioned will only be meagerly accomplished and we will still continue on the borrowing trends. Like almost any major infrastructure now we have to borrow to fund it.
This is normal market. If you have a shop and want to expand it you have to sell to the public not even your family members cause only then can you make more money to expand your shop. How many people fit consume gas for Nigeria, or we should start introducing gas subsidy another avenue to grossly decrease our income generation. Or we should start distributing free gas to people with stoves? Or creating more power generation plants when obviously the disco and consumer isn't on terms.

Any opinion that remotely resembles an opposition or criticism to what the govt (or someone in govt) says, a lot of people would naturally just buy into it as a smart opinion, irrespective of how flawed it is. That explains why an opinion which openly rubbishes the development of an export gas infrastructure to Europe can receive numerous endorsements.
