The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) has called on the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to resolve lingering issues to end the ongoing strike.

The Chairman of the committee, Prof. Samuel Edoumiekumo, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

He said it was crucial for both parties to come to an agreement to end the strike as soon as possible.

He urged them to honour agreements entered into for academic activities to commence in the affected universities.

“We have already given a press release arising from the meeting of the general assembly of the committee.

“We said that ASUU and the Federal Government should amicably resolve all lingering issues,” he said.

Edoumiekumo, who is the Vice-Chancellor of Niger Delta University, expressed optimism that the issues would be resolved soon

NAN reports that ASUU had on Feb. 14 embarked on a strike to press home some demands including a call for the government to implement the Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed in December 2020 on funding for the revitalisation of public universities.

Other demands are Earned Academic Allowances, renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) among others.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, had on Friday stated that the Federal Government and ASUU would resume negotiation this week. (NAN)

The only thing we know is to consume, not produce.

Naijiriya is a consuming nation, a market where other countries sell their products.

The VC's are lecturers too, aren't they?
I am very sure the VC's are pivotal to the strike as well, Unilorin as a case study.
So who is deceiving who?

Do our public tertiary institutions worth it? After all, our university trained technologists and engineers has never done anything meaningful.

Both ASUU and FG are mad.

The bitter truth is that in Nigeria, if you don't have money you are not guaranteed of quality education

Federal government is not ready to meet the demands, ASUU is not ready to get back, the two party are both threatening each other, but only one person is getting hurt.

Every party trying eat their cakes and have it

Greed is what is killing this nation.

The lecturers want to enjoy their own share of the national cake because they feel they are being left behind, since they can't loot and siphon money like those in Govt

Awesome!

The one that I know is that someone wants to brand our public schools as moribund and/or unviable with a view to selling the institutions to themselves and their cronies all in the name of “privatisation” of public institutions. Just like nitel, nepa and almost nnpc.

We are watching.
