[quote ] Haram 700  bombs intercepted in Abuja From MOLLY KILETE, ABUJA Friday,  July  15 ,  2011 A security alert was triggered last night as  soldiers intercepted a truck conveying no  fewer than 700  explosives in Abuja.  Daily Sun  gathered that the vehicle escorted  by two unarmed policemen was intercepted at the Abuja City Gate at about 8.00  p.m.  The serving policemen had successfully  beaten all security checkpoints at all the  entry points into the Federal Capital Territory with their deadly consignment until they got  to Lugbe on the Nnamdi Azikiwe International  Airport Road, where soldiers on routine duty  stopped them. It was gathered that the soldiers demanded to know what was in the truck and ordered the  policemen to alight. The policemen were said to have refused the  order, insisting they were doing the same kind  of work with the soldiers.  The soldiers, it was further learnt, insisted on  searching the truck and found the explosives  packed in 700  cartons. Commander, Brigade of Guards was promptly  alerted to the discovery and he dispatched a  team of soldiers to arrest the policemen.  The policemen were whisked to the Mambilla  Barracks where, it was gathered, they were  being detained.  Daily Sun  further gathered that the Brigade  Commander informed the Inspector General of  Police, Hafiz Ringim who rushed to the  Barracks and confirmed that the policemen  were not fake. He also ordered that they be  kept in the custody of the military. As at the time of filing this report at about  midnight, the Director of the State Security  Services (SSS) and other top security chiefs  had visited the Mambilla Barracks to inspect  the explosives. The arrest immediately sparked a wave of  security activities, including the deployment  of soldiers in various parts of the Federal  Capital Territory as well as government  establishments. It could not be immediately ascertained the  source of the explosives and where it was  coming from.  Only on Wednesday, the Islamist group, Boko  Haram, which had been t

You see! This is what I was saying, that Boko Haram has sympathizers and agents within the military and other security agencies that is why there are confident of themselves. I will not be surprised that some highly placed persons will develop interest in this case, lobbying with the aim of freeing the policemen, the consignment, and even the sponsors.

Nigeria is in trouble o. sad sad

What is This country turning to well now dat de millitary is involved am confident they would never be left off de hook. At the same time Nigerian police needs a serious reform too much corruption in dat arm of Nigerian security apparatus haba! since they have been accepting secondary school dropout as policemen i knew we r in trouble 4 naija.

I will not be surprised if it is finally unraveled that dere r sum political nuisance behind this Bokoharam issue anyways, i would say de SSS,Military police,DMI (Directorate of Military Intelligence) excluding de Nigerian police o! should do more in the area of intelligence sharing and gathering so as to curb this cancerous disease called bokoharam that is gradually becoming a Phenomenon in Nigeria. i will say kudos to the army officers dat detected dose explosives.

You think this can happen ? Why are OBJ, IBB, Anenih and many corrupt 'Alayes' not cooling off in jail? It is because, as long as Nigeria is led by stooges and those who are corrupt ,  some folks are and will remain untouchable !!! These "untouchable" folks will always leave someone 'amenable' in charge like Yar Adua and GEJ. They can kill 50 Nigerians in public view , with video uploaded to youtube, and no one will/can touch them . GEJ was quick to announce , the next day after the Abuja bombing, that "MEND did not do this". Why is he now silent about telling us who is behind/not behind these bombings? It is because he knows precisely who they are . In fact GEJ is not acting decisively because he thinks he cannot afford to 'mix it' with these people .

Nigerians should know that there is a conspiracy of silence between the sponsors of Boko Haram and GEJ. They are merely telling GEJ that they plan to make Nigeria ungovernable for him since he did not stick to the 'gentleman's agreement' . Many of us predicted this and were mocked . GEJ knows who they are . Sadly , ordinary Nigerians are the one losing their lives because of the egotistic power struggle of some vainglorious men who seek power yet are not fit to lead effectively. Utterly despicable shite we are in . This is why I stated it repeatedly that GEJ was accepting a 'poisoned chalice' from OBJ, Anenih et al. Now he is the perfect example of a President too compromised to do what is right .

a truck conveying no fewer than 700 explosives in Abuja.

Maybe the truck was to be used as a suicide truck-bomb at the International Airport.

Am not surprised about these happenings some few weeks ago I did posted a warning of the likely breach of security in this land principally because of some statistics the authorities ought to know! Between now and mid next year there will continue to be these breeches. Nigerians should gear up, be very alert in their own interest, seriously speaking.

Another reason why this Boko Haram are operating with some level of ease is that our military and security personnel are using the opportunity to make money. There are several occasions where these criminals are arrested by the junior ranks and handed over to their superiors. Sadly, the arrested crooks are released by the superior officers after collecting settlement. Hence the junior ranks have joined in getting settlements and letting the bombings go on. This is what I will call "Who is a fool syndrome", if not who is Boko Haram to dare the military?

We really need to look at the issue of corruption in government particularly from the highest echelon if we desire professionalism from our military and security agencies.

spot on, the same thing happened in Jos, the cosignment was for a construction company and they policemen had notes from the boss but they were busy making noise about intercepting bombs

THE Police and the Army authorities yesterday disagreed over the interception of a truck laden with explosives on its way to Jos from Kaduna.

Men of the Military Special Task Force (STF) were said to have intercepted the truck in the late hours of Thursday.

But the Commissioner of Police in charge of Anti-bomb Squad, Mr. Ambrose Aisabor, yesterdsy told newsmen that the business was legal and that the movement was authorised by the anti-bomb squad.

He said that STF was being mischievous by going on air even when one of his officers had intervened to tell them the true position. He said the company that owned the consignment was properly licensed by the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to deal in explosives for commercial purposes.

According to him, the explosives were being moved from the company’s magazine (a place where explosives are escorted, like armoury for arms) in Kaduna to the company’s magazine in Jos before the truck was intercepted.

Aisabor added that the constable that was escorting the explosives was properly authorised by his superiors in Kaduna, adding that the fact that he was not wearing his uniform as at the time the truck was intercepted could be dealt with departmentally.

“Explosives are used in aviation, road construction, oil companies to blast stones and the company has the proper licence to do the business. This is a cheap propaganda and they have succeeded in just deceiving themselves. They want people to know that they are working.

“The movement was a legal one and the law allows only men of the Anti-Bomb Squad (Explosives Ordinance Depot) to escort such consignment to its final destination and the truck was only 200 metres to its destination at Mister Ali before it was intercepted. I was made to understand that one of my officers asked the driver to give the phone to the soldiers to speak to them but they refused.

“This is what we mean when we say that there is no cooperation and synergy between the security agencies. If not that they want to be mischievous, what they should have done was to ask questions and why the policeman was in mufti. Then they would have got better explanation, instead of raising this kind of media hype and anxiety in an already tense situation like the one in Jos,” he said.

He added that all the documents presented by the driver were genuine while the policeman had his identity card with him at the time the truck was intercepted.

The Manager of Duwam Company Limited, the owners of the consignment, Bashir Ahmed, corroborated the account of the police. He told newsmen on telephone from his base in Kaduna that the consignment was being moved from the company’s magazine in Kaduna to Jos and that the company had been engaged in the business for many years.

Your observation is very correct bro, some people always want to be mischievous at all cost  . . .but, i still feel we can't rule away the previous scenario that happened in Jos as pointed out by Dis Guy . .  i have slight skepticism about this story until more facts are released  . .i don't want to be excited yet  wink

It is a serious security issue that people with names like that still have permission to handle explosives, considering the extraordinary situation in which we find ourselves in this country.

Is it not possible that the Boko Haram are getting the raw materials from people like these who have license to deal in these things, and are their natural sympathisers?

It may mean innocent people's business will suffer, but I think we're better safe than sorry, and eliminate that possible threat, so we can move on to the next possible source of explosive material. Those who are dealing in fertiliser should also be under close watch, or their stockpile recovered and moved down south. Another extreme measure, but we are living in extreme times.

Finally, if the President wants to really put a stop to this nonsense, he should hand over ALL internal security to Southerners and Northern and Middle-Belt Christians only, at all levels. Ditto for immigration. All external land borders should be sealed immediately, and nomadic cattle rearers should also be put under serious security watch immediately.

Hate to say this, but you ran your mouth wider than you can breathe!

The SUN newspaper with thier 'akara' journalism ran a sensationalized story on thier front page without due deligence and confirmation.

The Nigeria Army and the Police HQ have come out to denounce the story, confirming that the truck load of explosives intercepted by the police was strictly for a mining company, and that vehicle was carrying the explosives to site with the bill of content and transport duly attached and an escort police was even amongst those following the vehicle!

I think the Nigerian press should make serious effort to verify thier stories before rushing to print.

^^^But we were not told the loc thy bought it from. Moreover, there was no official police permit for the transaction. How are we sure it was not a fast one to cover up the whole story? I don't trust this our police o. Papers can be produced under 2 minutes to make the transaction genuine. That is why many things are wrong because we live in an era of "decieve me, I decieve you, God no go vex". One thing I believe is whosoever diggeth a pit, same shall fall in it.

The police this time gave details on where the company were transporting the explosives from and the destination site . The only query the police raised was that the company didnot brief the high command of the exact planned movement of the truck so as to enable her men keep guard on the road in anticipation of the passage of the truck.

The army were even more categorical in thier press release, going a step further to mention the name of the company, the individuals who were escorting the truck and the name of the director of the company who also confirmed the truck movement and subsequent interception and release of the truck by the Nigeria police upon confirming the ownership of the explosives as belonging to the company and its intended purpose for mining.
