Several reputable global intelligence agencies such as the CIA and the rest had predicted that a time would come when warlords would begin to carve out territories from within the Nigerian federation, which would eventually lead to its demise. However, by God's grace we have been able to survive it all and even shamed them for predicting our collapse.

Unfortunately, it seemed like we celebrated Uhuru quite too early because what is happening now in Nigeria has started taking a more dangerous and scary dimensions.

Nigeria has suddenly become a banana republic where all manner of groups, including non state actors now walk the streets in broad daylight carrying RPG's, AK47, rockets and the rest!! The pictures and videos that emerged yesterday showing Asari Dokubo and his group walking through the streets of Port Harcourt heavily armed and even wearing military camo is a new low and dangerous dimension. For starters, considering that even small arms are illegal in Nigeria, what gave Asari and his boys such daring guts??!

Take a look at how Nigeria is gradually being balkanized:

North East:
Boko Haram is trying to seize control of North East and they now have local governments they control, collecting tax and levies imposed on individuals, farmers and businesses.

North West:
Boko Haram and Bandits are struggling to upstage one another on which group controls this region. Even state governors now identify openly with them in places like Katsina, Zamfara etc. Recently, a popular bandit leader was made emir in this region. Rural dwellers, farmers and businesses also pay tax to them.

North Central:
Just like in the NW, Boko Haram, bandits and Herdsmen are also trying to carve out specific territories for themselves. States like Niger, Benue, Nassarawa, and even the FCT are now facing unprecedented attacks and threats of being overwhelmed by these forces.

South East:
IPOB secessionists are struggling to seize control of this region, enforcing shut-ins every Monday. There has been reports that they also collect tax from shop owners and motorists, as well as burial levy from villagers. They have been confronting the army and police in deadly clashes too.

South West:
Although, attempts by Odua secessionists in this region wasn't successful as their leader was arrested and imprisoned. However, bandits and Herdsmen are believed to have entrenched themselves in the forests and highways. Killing, kidnapping and wrecking havoc. A militia group called the Amotekun was formed by the governors to stem the tide but they haven't been successful.

South South:
Militants once struggled with the federal government over control of the oil resources in this region. However, peace was restored when president Yaradua granted them amnesty. However, tensions may be on the rise again. Especially with footages showing non state actors like Asari Dokubo, a local militant walking the streets of Port Harcourt with such heavy arms.

All these goes to show that Nigeria's central government has become so agonizingly weak that it now finds it difficult to protect its territorial integrity. If things continue to degenerate in this way, the country will not be able to survive it.

Nigeria needs to elect responsible leaders now or brace up for the worst.
