A former Inspector-General of Police,
Mustapha Balogun, died at a hospital in Lekki, Lagos at about 8:30 pm on Thursday during a brief illness, according to family sources.

Born August 25, 1947, in Ila Orangun,
Osun State, he was appointed the IGP in
March 2002.

Balogun died at 74, a few days to his 75th
birthday.

He was a member of Cadet Assistant
Superintendent of Police Course 3. He
worked in various Police commands across
the Federation and was promoted as of when due. He was also a Principal Staff Officer to the former IGP, Muhammadu Gambo, Deputy Commission of Police, Edo State, and the pioneer Commissioner of Police in Delta State.

He also served as a Commissioner of
Police in Rivers and Abia states.

He was appointed Assistant Inspector
General of Police in charge of Zone One
Kano State, the position he was holding
when promoted to the IGP on March 6,
2002.

Balogun, who was convicted in 2005 on
eight charges of corruption, had his corruption case reopened in 2020.

The Nigerian top police officer was brought to court in handcuffs. They dealt with the man and rubbished him.

That's why it is a terrible thing to dine with crooks. There's no honour amongst thieves. They'll always mess themselves up. It is better to be scrupulous and straight. Nobody - not your enemies or even friends, would find it easy to slur you!

After this man personally busted the dreaded Okija shrine, I knew one guy that nicknamed himself Tafa Balogun that year. The guyman was frequently served a hearty breakfast of slaps in school after the original was captured on camera chopping slaps from a constable to hasten his steps into the Black Maria! RIP Tafa the original, ur namesake has since rediscovered the beauty of the traditional name his parents gave to him on his naming day.

Greed killed this man's career.

I remember there, he stole N17b, but when one of his boys who was tasked to convert the stolen money took N5m from the stolen N17b, Tafa wanted to kill him.

Mind you this stolen N17b is police pension money or something like that.

Na him his orderly said why will I die for N5m he stile from his Oga's stolen N17b?

That's how the guy reported and it got to OBJ.

OBJ invited Tafa and gave him and already written resignation letter to sign. That was how Tafa was out of power.

The rest is history on how he was malhandled especially during transportation from court to prison etc.

That was when corruption was frowned at a little and not what we have today.

Remembered for corruption while serving as IG of police. I cannot remember him for anything else. Corruption indeed tarnishes image.

A lesson to all especially our public office holders.
We all will die regardless of his much u have either legitimately or fraudulently.
Meanwhile, OBJ too is no saint. He threw Tafa out of office because of fraud but we also heard how he went about canvassing for 3rd term with billions of naira.
