So I popped into the politics forum there and I swear to god, they're all morons. Almost every single one of them just sat there and circle jerked each other making completely unrealistic claims saying "well this is how the world should be" and saying completely idiotic and unrealistic things that might actually be true in a perfect utopian society, but are completely impossible in real life. I'm not sure if this is a failure of the schools, which are in fact teaching socialism and liberalism or what, because something isn't right if we have a bunch of 13 and 16 year old neo-communists.

What has the world come to? We have a bunch of teenagers who are worship Barack Obama and Karl Marx, as if they're gods. These kids have been brainwashed into becoming unthinking socialists. Hell I've been posting on forums for well over half a decade, since I was 13, but not even I was that stupid. What are we as a society going to do about these unthinking hooligans and their new-found love of socialism?

Being oblivious of politics doesnt make one sillly. Everybody has areas of interest. Some, it's sports, some it's technology i.e a 30 year old may not be able to engage teenagers in sports history and knowledge, or latest inventions in the world of technology. It is when a teenager is totally oblivious of all these or more that you can draw conclusion, although versatility requires knowing something about everything.

Most normal teenagers would be more interested in the latest fashion trends and pop music stars, while trying to plot strategies for getting laid with the one they crave. The teenage brain is compartmentalized in two hemispheres, the right one devoted to fashion, and the left one to sex.


Politics is way too boring a consideration to appear on the radar screen of any normal teenager, and it would be strange indeed to browse any teenage oriented internet forum and encounter dissertations on bilateral relations with communist China, or the balance of trade in the Eurozone.

yeah we are designing a dream world in our minds, Even though I'm not a teenager anymore like I was 2yrs ago, I understand where the teenagers are coming from,

This reality is by design, Monetary system must crash, all old dehumanizing systems got to go, We don't want money no more!!

You would think that the so called adults are any better when it comes to politics. With many adults the circle jerking and unrealistic claims become laced with myopic self serving tendencies which have wider implications than what the teenagers do.

@ poster, if you want to know why they are the way they are, look at the parents.

Only a teenager interested in politics or brought up in a politically active household may really be interested in politics. The teenagers you're speaking about probably form their views by what they see in the new and on the internet or the odd comment they hear people say. They still haven't formed their own opinions.

Life is still a learning curve for them, let them live in their utopian sheltered existence a little bit longer. Reality will hit them soon enough.

Because the so- called Politics in Nigeria is mainly focused on 'MONEY LAUNDERING AND GREED'' rather than them,
laying good examples for the youths, towards working hard for the betterment of the country.

This topic is one meant to just arouse conversation of a silly nature! what do you mean 'where are teenagers oblivious to politics?' such is the state of the teenage awareness of politics, that it is not only one of the most oversubscribed courses at university, there is now more participation from the youths than ever before. The political discourse is growing, not only in Nigeria. But all over the world!

I would not say the teens are oblivious as much as they are disillusioned with the current political system. That is usually when people start looking for alternatives and communism(as Marx intended) is typically the first to come up. I do not blame them as the voting age is 18, so they have next to no political influence to begin with. Along those same lines, an individuals vote is like a drop in the ocean so it does not really matter even if they could.

As a teenager the last thing I was interested in was politics, even now that am grown I still hate the topic though I keep abreast with issues in our polity and beyond, for the sake of being well informed so I don't mis-yarn when arguing or debating with my pals

In case you didnt realise, Nairaland is also filled with teenagers with a lot of impulsive behavior. This is why you see unnecessary insults flying left and right.

On a serious note : We are teenagers. Our minds are very flexible, young, allergic to boring things, and occupied with a whole bunch of things (politics not being one of them). Being oblivious to Politics doesn't mean one is silly. How knowledgeable you are in politics is not a measure of your intelligence either.

Give it time-- we'll soon become old enough to talk about politics all day.

hey,OP,u dont have to generalise,i have been politically inclined since i was in js3 thats when i was around 13,during the alams saga.and am still a teenager and i am still interested in politics,dnt come here and start generalising.but i wont argue that a large percentage of teenagers are politically ignorant,and the argument of being 18 b4 voting doesnt hold water,so its wen deir 18,that they should start bin aware abi?so dat our clever politicians can use dem wen dey r still politically timid. :/

@OP I share your sentiments exactly, a lot of posters even on NL Politics section do not realize the critical importance of Politics to Living in all its entirety. Politics has been in the fabric of society since the time of Adam/Eve. it is a state of discernment known as[b] Political Awareness[/b]. It is the very essence of living as a Society. Teenagers these days are barely literate when it comes to Political Awareness, they know the reasons behind voting/elections but fail to value the importance of justifying why they vote from a political standpoint. to them it is simply a civic duty one must perform. the depths of Political Awareness in our teens is so shallow and can be seen in the mindless political rants and one-way traffic opinions we see daily on NL. It amounts only to Political Information thus little Knowledge is shared and little Wisdom gained. Our Youths are just cannon-fodder for the corrupt polity we see today.

Religion (Sister to Politics) on the other hand is more to their liking because it speaks to their individuality. Politics speaks to Society which is why Political Awareness is more important than Religion of any sort.  It is what enables the citizens to know their leaders and know how far they can go with their civil rights and why things must work as expected. We are sadly breeding a generation of jean-sagging boys, butt-flashing girls and MTV-addicted youths who care little for Political Awareness- I hear there are few among the minions but i do not see their contribution to building an institution of Politically-Aware citizens who can tell can use constitutional means to remove a bad leader long before he has done the sort of damage we see everyday.

I read books and watched documentaries (pbs) so i missed out on the MTV brainwashing.

The problem is getting worse. Watch this doumentary on frontline.com called "Merchants of cool" i'll put a link if anyone wants. It talks about how 'cool' programs teach teens how to think.

That same kid I was talking about earlier in the OP, now he says that he wants to hold the United States responsible for dropping the atomic bombs over 60 years ago and hold a posthumous trial of the scientists who helped design and build it.

@pleep i find your statement very wrong,i devote my time to watching MTV and all u can think of,yet i never miss my daily "Community Sunshine","Sunday's Punch Tunde Fagbenle" and This day regular news,its as a result of individuality.yes the media and society is to be blamed partly,the youth of today are even more aware of politics than before, but in a wrong manner,you see most of them get information via social networks and citizenship journalism and whatsoever,however because now the internet is now free for anyone to post awful and fallacies all over the net.the teenagers are now faced with improper information meant to either twist the truth or blow the current development out of proportions. do you know that most teenagers i spoke to voted, for Jonathan because he was active on facebook and twitter,talk about being myopic. I think we should try to encourage a reading habit being participative in politics is not just enough because of programming am addicted to reading everyday be it "X-Rated Magazine,Bible,Brevik Manifesto,My Programming Books or even (trusted online Newspaper media)",in fact in short words the teenagers of today want their news summarized to 140 characters which to me is just plain absurd and lazy.

It seems to me that the OPs problem is not their obliviousness to politics rather that their politics differ from his? Obliviousness to politics is my 15 year old cousin (born and bred in the uk) not knowing who David Cameron was.

Fact is, those people may be unrealistic, but how most political ideas are unrealistic by nature. They never end up in their purest form.
