When a committee was setup by the Lagos state government to investigate the collapse of the 21-storey building still under construction located at 20, Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, that killed 42 people including the owner, Femi Osibona, who was managing director of Fourscore Heights Limited, I knew that no matter the recommendations from the committee, nothing will happen to anyone found culpable!

Just by looking at the sight from the bottom to the top,you will know this structure was poorly conceived and might likely collapse anytime soon!

Until individuals or companies are severely punished with jail terms for negligence and incompetence,buildings will keep collapsing and no amount of 'God forbid' or 'prayers' will stop it from happening!

The rot in Lagos Public service will not help the situation. Visual inspection alone gave the building away. No single column nor beam was visible. They had to wait until the building collapsed and killed people before they came up with the story that the property was sealed three times before it finally collapsed. How come there wasn't any enforcement ?


Just try to renovate a small bungalow and see their officials coming to mark a giant 'X' on your property with red paint. The glaringly dangerous ones like the one in the pictures above will never see the red paint.

The entrenched perfidy, bribery and rent collection in Lagos is second to none especially in the public service.

That's the reason houses will keep collapsing like packs of cards.

Hmmm..... I thought this building just collapsed without warning . If the person who shot the video can see the building swaying ... and can see the danger .... why couldn't they in the agency responsible for building safety not see this?... how many certified engineers in that department.. none recognized the danger? This video is such powerful evidence to show how irresponsible the City is.I just hope somehow a lawsuit is filed against the City and the person who certified the building was safe.... and the matter brought to court . Many may say this is a waste of time... but it is not. It is possible that the judge had a close relative who was a victim in a building collapse and has been waiting for such a lawsuit to make the City get its act together... and to send a message to those who take bribes and endanger the lives of the public.

It is obvious that this was certainly going to collapse because from the look of things,the columns in the ground floor are not properly reinforced. It's supposed to be very huge columns because they are the columns that carry majority of the loads.
