A New Nollywood; Is Nollywood Getting Any Better? by DESS1(f): 3:08pm On Aug 15, 2011
Its no news that some of the players in the Nigerian Film Industry have stepped up their game. We have seen better production equipments, camera shots, scenes, premieres and maybe attractive movie posters. Its a good trend of hollywood adaptation. It hurts so much that after spending so much money and little time, silly mistakes, childish make-ups amongst the rest are still common in our movies. There is also an absence of essential marketing structure as to making Nollywood a bigger and better industry. I wonder if the Nollywood is getting better?

better productions,better picture qualities but same old silly scripts and even worse acting from non-actors.
genuinely talented kids are graduating from theatre arts every year from our universities,can't get roles and they end up in banks and insurance firms.
yet fair skinned girls with relatively large bosoms are embarrasing themselves on our screens in the name of acting and we fete them as celebrities.
Nollywood can do so much better.
Re: A New Nollywood; Is Nollywood Getting Any Better? by oderemo(m): 8:09am On Aug 24, 2011
^^^, u are dead wright there. nollywood better shape up or get overtaken by other wood around the corner. the only permanent thing in life is change itself.
the scripts are awful, directing , editting and what not need serious improvements. how on earth can they expect ppl to praise moronic actor/actress and pay to wacth them baffle reality.
Re: A New Nollywood; Is Nollywood Getting Any Better? by Nobody: 8:23am On Aug 24, 2011
As long as the scripts/plot-lines are wack,as they still seem to be,No matter how tech the equipment are,we'll have no progress.

I second this opinion especially with the international recognition that some of them are giving Nollywood.

that is what u get when u have illiterate Ibo men who are the producers,financiers and distributors, crass and crappy thrash,
Re: A New Nollywood; Is Nollywood Getting Any Better? by lagerwhenindoubt(m): 9:08am On Aug 24, 2011
@OP, Nollywood is clearly not out of the woods yet. better production equipment is one step but the art of Film-Making is another realm they have not quite nailed it. They are at least upfront about it and there exists institutions that tutor proper modern methods. Most of our actors also need to step up their game, Local productions are no longer for the illiterate masses, the need to fill in a gap leftover from stale Holly and Bollywood genres is glaringly obvious but if that need is still being filled with movies with stale plots, poor directing and production, then Nollywood will be overtaken by other film-making regions that have learned from other peoples experience

That era is long-gone, Banks, Companies and wealthy -literate individuals now sponsor movies and distribution is via Cinemas and Theaters

Perhaps its time to shift the focus from quantity to quality. Quality is not limited to the equipments used, but script Contents as well.

I recently watched some Yoruba movies( EG AWA OBIRIN BY FUNKE AKINDELE) and to me they are relatively ok,i  maybe suffering from low expectation.A lot still need to be done.
Re: A New Nollywood; Is Nollywood Getting Any Better? by TPS360: 10:36am On Aug 24, 2011
I stopped watching Nollywood movies around 2004. The PICTURE quality is way much better compared to the early days of nollywood in the 90's but its unfortunate that the industry has lost what made it thick, amazing story lines and script.

Well, I don't know which Ghanaian movies you are talking about because I can only name two directors out of the lot who bring something close to Hollywood to our screens, Leila Djansi and Shirley Frimpong Manso. The rest are video footage marketers. Leila Djansi especially is really good with everything from the technical aspect to the script. She even brings down known hollywood faces for some of her productions. Shirley Is also good and continues to improve but the rest are rubbish.

The movie industry,i mean Nollywood is actually improving,but the only problem i would say that is presently facing the industry is AMORALITY.It is very sad that negligence is now the talk of the day.There is movie poster you will see on the road without seeing a naked lady showcasing either bra,pants or even breast.This is totally ungodly,if care is not taken Nollywood will turn to BLUE FILM INDUSTRY.MAY GOD HELP US.

DESS!:

   Its no news that some of the players in the Nigerian Film Industry have stepped up their game. We have seen better production equipments, camera shots, scenes, premieres and maybe attractive movie posters. Its a good trend of hollywood adaptation. It hurts so much that after spending so much money and little time, silly mistakes, childish make-ups amongst the rest are still common in our movies. There is also an absence of essential marketing structure as to making Nollywood a bigger and better industry. I wonder if the Nollywood is getting better?

I think Nollywood has stepped up their game but their still needs to be more work to be done. People need to understand that Nollywood had it's genesis around the 50's or 60's but didn't take off until the mid-1980's, so it needs alot or work to be done. I feel the scripts for the Englsih Nollywood industry tend to be in the range of from A+ to F at times and it depends on the director, quality and ect, however I feel quality in Nollywood movies have gotten better though compared to years ago but sometimes the scripts are hit and misses. Sometimes it depends on the director and who is in the movie at times though, so to me Nollywood is in a transitional stage because Nollywood is now doing many international movies now from tangle with me, Ije, Figaurine, the ties that bind, and etc

Examples of good quality and some international Nollywood movies

[flash=500,500]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG2rHUx7hz4[/flash]

As I said before there still needs to be work done, we still have quality issues, script issues at times; however when it comes to the Yoruba Nollywood Industry I feel they have 10x better storylines and scripts because it is real and more authentic(but they are not always perfect at times to though but better) then the english movies industry but they just need to fix their quality and location problems though but here are examples of Yoruba movies that were excellent to me:

[flash=500,500]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXLG28-Fj6c[/flash]
[flash=500,500]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCXOimYeXTE&feature=watch-now-button&wide=1[/flash]
[flash=500,500]

[flash=500,500]

[flash=500,500]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgGOGE8fpmM&feature=watch-now-button&wide=1[/flash]

So I feel Nollywood movies will keep on progressing further then we expect but their will be bumps in the road. As much as Nollywood gets criticism, they have brought pride for Black africans, so we should at least show appreciation, there is nothing more better then seeing your own in a movie.

M M M:

I don't think so, Nollywood is moving forward because if it wasn't you wouldn't see documentaries, CNN specials and etc on it but instead Ghollywood:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_zOOPNgA_A[/flash]
[flash=500,500]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpPXgStqjfs[/flash]

The only thing that is moving forward in Ghollywood is their quality (which is a A+) but when it comes to scripts besides Shirley Frimpong-Manson, the rest is rubbish, if it is not X-rated, the script is over-westernized, less authentic and etc. Even Shirley's movies even though it has good quality, has been overly westernized at times, especially that Adams apple's movies she has brought out.
Re: A New Nollywood; Is Nollywood Getting Any Better? by babyboy3(m): 3:10pm On Nov 15, 2011
The only thing Nollywood have over Ghollywood is the Acting and the storyline (which they are both crap) but movie production, editing, picture sharpness Ghollywood is far better than Nollywood because the Ghanaian invested heavily in the production side thats why they are few producers or directors but their acting is so poor they make Nollywood feel like Hollywood,
