Police recruits to undergo psychiatric tests –PSC

As from now henceforth, new entrants into the Nigeria Police Force are to undergo a compulsory psychiatric test, National Mirror has learnt. Chairman of Police Service Commission (PSC), Parry Osayande said this when the National Working Group on Human Rights Treaty Reporting (NWGHRTR) visited the commission.

He said the commission chooses to adopt modern scientific method in its ongoing recruitment exercise in order to eliminate cases of having officers who are mentally unbalanced and who could be a source of embarrassment to the Force. Osayande explained that the candidates being screened for the post of Inspectors and Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) are to be subjected to biometric and polygraph tests to determine their suitability and fitness for the force.

According to him, with the polygraph test, the officers would be able to detect chronic alcoholics and those with psychiatric cases who may later become nuisance in the Force. He said this is the only way the PSC can ensure that those enlisted in the Force have the capacity to subject themselves to the civil populace whom they were employed to protect and added that those who fail the tests would be asked to go home. Earlier, the Team Leader of the rights group, Abdulrahaman Yakubu said the body was set up by the Federal Government through the auspices of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice in 2010 to ensure proper and quality reporting of human rights issues in Nigeria.
