The latest is the Samsung Galaxy Xcover, the water and dust proof Android phone for those who take part in outdoor activities, such as walking, cycling, rock climbing and going on or very near to the sea.

Galaxy Xcover runs on Android 2.3, has a 3megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, has an 800MHz processor, etc.

As long as I dont have any other better chat messenger as good as blackberry messenger and most of my friends and loved ones are on blackberries, bb is the best to me.  On the messenger, you can send files, pics, music, videos and easily too. You can even send voice messages.  In addition to this, it is user friendly and  easier to carry, the pin it comes with makes it unique no wonder the likes of liveprofile chat messenger are also using pin.  Let us put it into poll.

Blackberry is one of the best messaging tools out there. In the bid to stretch the features to provide rich multimedia, and lay on the Apple feeling, maybe they bit off a little more than they can chew. My Storm hangs like every 5 minutes.

The Samsung Galaxy is a badass phone. With the widgets on Android, the Super AMOLED screen . . . Samsung have a kickass product. Small wonder Apple is trying to get the Tab kicked out of Europe. Samsung have winner products right there.

BB is popular in Naija simply because of BBM and the fact that it forms a clique with its unique pins. Aside from these BBs are not anything to write home about in todays smartphone market. The Samsung Galaxy S II arguably the worlds best smart phone is miles ahead of anything RIM currently has. It will do everything any BB faster and smarter.
OP my advice get the Samsung S II BB is a sinking ship Android is the new king.

The point is , what do you need in a phone ?. Just as many have pointed out , if you are a messaging freak who needs to keep in touch with family , friends and associates , look no further than a BB but if you are more of a tech wiz then an android based phone would just do.

You need to explorer other phones to arrive at a conclusion that Iphone rules

When it comes to the effectiveness of the touch screen, dont bring any other phone close to the Iphone, Iphone responds, as in RESPONDS LG and HTC socks here
when it comes to apps installation, Iphone lets you install all blackberry has, plus more
for instance, being an IT person, I have been able to get an Httpd server, python interpreter, VLC player(this play AVI, MP4, 3GP,WMV,MP3), FTP server, FTP client, SSH Client, well it comes with SSH Server if you dont know,

When it comes to gaming, Dude! the iphone is a machine, ask those who use it, There are games that reply only on moving the phone (like the Nintendo WII) with no key presses.
Well it comes with a qwerty keyboard that shows only when needed, larger in size compared to whatever blackberry will give you

I remember loading java video tutorials on it and watching it while traveling, Since am always too busy coding and will never have the patient to sit and learn.
when bored, i'll switch to some HD videos, or space falcon invaders, that game beats every game i've ever seen on mobiles

just watch this video i got off the internet, this game, NFSU

When it comes to apps, you just can't beat Android. With Samsung Galaxy SII, the question is not what can you do with your phone, but what CAN'T you do with your phone. It is funny that people are talking of such cheap things like TV, yahoo, facebook, and so on. Things I consider too cheap to bother with when I have a gadget that can do far far more. Even Nokia 3310 and some cheap no-name Chinese phones do all those. If you want to impress, Samsung Galaxy SII is just it.

Bandit C.:

Bro. I have no idea where you live but out here in Europe, nobody uses a blackberry phone or even knows where they sell one simply because blackberry phones are rocking pretty old techs and cannot compete anymore with the iPhone and Android Smartphones. I would advice you to go for an Android phone and if you do, please stay away from Samsung phones because their hardware is utter crap decked with plastic cover. I use an HTC Desire HD (check it out) and that phone is a beast, with a snapdragon processor, mature look and some of the best interface on a mobile platform that i have ever seen,so i would advice you to get an HTC Phone. If the Desire HD is too costly for you, you might wanna check out the new smaller Desire S, crazy phone i tell you.

About apps, whoever tells you that a blackberry has more apps than the iOS (iPhone) or Android OS is a straight up clown or has no internet to keep himself up to date. Get an Android Phone and go to the android marketplace to get yourself overwhelmed by the number of apps that are there and most of them are free. There is an app for virtually anything you want (even ones that let you point your phone camera skywards and get detailed information on every airplane that is flying through at that moment, even ones hidden behind the clouds). So i would advice you pick up an android phone.

Then again, if you are in Nigeria, you might want to join others in acquiring a blackberry phone, so that your status would magically be upgraded, lol.

Please preach it to them. I am sick and tired of all these girls wey dey use BB dey make inyanga for everybody in public places, not even knowing that Research in Motion can't even sell enough phones to keep its workforce afloat!

Android for Life!

Re: Is A Blackberry Better? by Nobody: 8:46pm On Aug 21, 2011
I have used both of the mobile phones, BB and Samsung. I know quite well how they differ in many ways and I can quite say one is better than the other without proves. It largely depends on the spec you are using. On the other hand Samsung is flashy and lighter than BB. I have used BB curve, bold and torch and Samsung Bada, Galaxy s and galaxy S II the better one is hard to agree on without looking at what one wants from them.

What I have observed is that BB is more durable  than Samsung. Where Samsung can easily develop faults BB remains functional. One example is when my BB bold fell off my front pockets several times and it still worked but my Samsung Galaxy s fell off two times or there about the touchscreen remained a problem, I have to press the top and sweep hard before it will open. Sometimes it will just be operating different things when not told to do so. Even after software upgrade it still behaves that way some times.

Above other problems, I think BB is more manageable than Samsung.
Re: Is A Blackberry Better? by ambyzown(m): 9:07pm On Aug 21, 2011
You have to be specific when you say you want to buy a Samsung phone. As far as I know, Android running Samsung phones beat their comparative Blackberry devices. The only thing keeping Blackberry selling is its Messaging feature (BBM). Even the Apple iPhone trounces the Blackberry flagship device, and we all know that the Samsung Galaxy S II is the worlds best selling smartphone as at today. The decision is yours, but I believe BB is on its way to the grave.
Re: Is A Blackberry Better? by ragdollz: 9:14pm On Aug 21, 2011
Blackberry is actually the best thing to happen to smartphones. The BBM is not even on the top 10 of what you can enjoy from your BB if only you knew how. If you buy/download the right kind of apps, anything can happen on your BB. Why? Because many web-based companies have designed BB-compliant apps so that people with BBs can access their products/sights. I blog a lot and can do it straight from my BB, I can create whole document using Doc-to-go, excel etc right on the phone. Many other stuff which I know some androids can achieve. However, #BB for now is the most respected.

You may also want to consider the Android running SonyEricsson Xperia Arc. A stunning example of a solidly built smartphone.
For those of you die-hard blackberry fans who refuse to believe that the Blackberry OS is a sinking ship, are you aware that RIM is currently developing a BBM for Android and IOS platforms?

Lol, anyone who'll call Blackberry a sinking ship is really taking it personal!! Well, Apple had the same problems, everyone just wanted it to suck by force!! But these things are top worldwide for a reason: they rock!

Samsung Galaxy S II na pure shine shine phone . . . lots of exciting stuff poor battery life (yeah i know the apps are responsible for that) . . . im about to ditch my galaxy s II for a more rugged blackberry

@ambyzown
Yes! Every mobile phone makers need innovations.  There is nothing wrong with trying something different, if you stayed to a particular thing without change you will soon be out of business before you recognize it - so, that is what BB is trying to do. I think BB is a very strong mobile phone beside flashy, bling and applications compatibility. Touchscreen is the now now and 4g is the future and these phone makers know things which are really important and they are trying get along with them.

I still think BB is a great mobile phone maker and Samsung as well. Business men would prefer BB to Samsung any way!
Re: Is A Blackberry Better? by Oba234: 10:06pm On Aug 21, 2011
I have a Galaxy s, which is a samsung droid phone and so are HTC phones. I love my Galaxy. I don't even know I used other phones before this. Blackberrys are popular in Nigeria and they were popular in the US for a while, but in the US we have graduated to bigger and better phones. Most of my friends that are still on blackberry are looking for ways to switch their phones to a droid or Iphone. Everyone knows blackberry shares have been falling since 2010.
Re: Is A Blackberry Better? by ambyzown(m): 10:45pm On Aug 21, 2011
@all4naija: Finally one mature and informed response from a bb fan. Undeniably, blackberry was created for the business-centric mobile subscriber who wanted secure access to his company's server. So tell me why Nigerians believe it is the best thing that ever happened to yahoo mail. Bb was designed as a messaging device several decades ago. Its OS is currently outdated when compared to its competitors. You mentioned 4g being the next logical step. Samsung already has 4g phones out in the market, but no current bb os supports 4g. That's why I say bb is a sinking ship.
Lest we get carried away, the OP asked for a non business phone, which essentially knocks the bb out.
Re: Is A Blackberry Better? by Akainzo(m): 11:14pm On Aug 21, 2011
@OP,

Just as you would have read, people have different opinions about different phones. Therefore, it is really up to you to list you needs and tick the phones off as they meet your requirements. You are the one to use the phone and the one to pay the bills for its use, go through many reviews and don't forget to do hands-on on the devices if possible.

Below are my personal opinions on these phones:
Email integration: While the others would poll your mails, BLackberry would push it to your phone. This means your mails would arrive on your phone faster on the BB than any other phone. Also, due to its push and use of NOC the total cost of delivering mails to you are cheaper.

Document handling: Almost all smartphones can enable you view documents, with some rudimentary edits, only the Blackberry brings the full office experience to you. This means almost all the Excel functions are available for you on your phone plus it allows you to create presentation slides.

Instant Messaging: The Blackberry Messenger is the de-facto IM standard that all the other smartphone makers are trying to recreate. It enables you to share, socialise and have instant communication with fellow BB users. Note however that except on the iphone, there exist cross-platform apps that would allow you to communicate with others just like the BBM but like I said they are all trying to emulate the BBM.

Internet: All smartphones allow you to browse the internet. The beef here is all about which is faster, but truly the difference in speed are in seconds rather than minutes. However you might want to know that the Blackberry browser is till the most secure as it implements the full https spectrum, which is why for now, its still the only platform.supporting the Verisign secure payment standard.

Build: When it comes to build quality the Blackberry phones are definitely rugged and with polish. They are in my opinion followed by the Nokia E-series phones in quality. The Samsung and HTC  are generally of lower quality but right now, HTC is rebuilding its brand and this is reflecting in the quality of its newer models. You can also count on the build quality of the iPhone. You might want to know that that Blackberry is however the only maker to make so called smartphones for the.lower class, hitherto smartphones are seen as 'bigger boys' toys but Blackberry still makes some affordable ones at lower cost but with all the smartphone functionalities.

Apps ecosystem: The apps ecosystem for the Android and iOS platforms are clearly ahead of the competing platforms of BB, Symbian or Windows Phone. However, the availability of 50,000 apps really makes no difference to the average user, most would use between 7 and 15, but one should recognize that choice is readily available on both the iOS and Android platforms.

Cost of Use: The Total Cost of Owning a smartphone on the BB platform is significantly lower than other competing platforms due to the fact that RIM (the maker of Blackberry) using its NOCs and agreement with vendors ensures that data usage is maximised and a cheaper cost to the user than the competing platforms.

The above are what I term as important, you may have other things you consider important and you need to decide which platform.suits your needs.

All the best.
