Nothing can totally destroy the universe. Even those that build nuclear weapons have underground bunkers for few numbers of their selected elites and super-rich(billionaires) safety. They already have underground cities as well, but the location is keep secret. They have endtime doomdays bunkers. It is we on the surface of the ground that at the launch of nuclear attack that will die through vast destruction and after effects of the nuclear fall out. The surface of the earth will no longer be for we humans. Humans will start to live underground to survive and look for ways perhaps after centuries to return to earth surface.

We are getting there. There are some people who are toying with the idea of a limited nuclear war and they are really pushing for it.

No country in the world is fully prepared for nuclear war. The underground bunkers can only save people for a while. Russia has the highest number of underground metro rail lines in the world. The major cities in Russia has it own underground metro. The metros have the capacity to shield millions of ordinary Russians (not the elite) from air and nuclear attack. But the metros and the special bunkers being built in different part of the world can only save people for a while. Food, electricity, waste management e.t.c are going to be major problem in a long run.

Nuclear weapon should not be fought. Although some people will survive. But it will end civilisation.

Even if all the Countries with nuclear weapons unleash their weapons on earth which is not possible, the earth won't be destroyed.
