The United Nations Children’s Fund has again raised the alarm that Nigeria loses about 100 children per hour due to malnutrition. This translates to about 2,400 deaths daily. It, therefore, called for increased funding and other measures that could help in arresting the challenge urgently.

Speaking in Lagos on Thursday during an interaction with media executives, UNICEF’s Chief Nutrition Officer in Nigeria, Nemat Hajeebhoy, noted that Nigeria was moving towards a nutrition emergency. The event was organised by the National Council on Nutrition, chaired by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo

Hajeebhoy said one-third of children in Nigeria lived in severe food poverty, adding that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life offered a unique window of opportunity for preventing undernutrition and its consequences.

She stated, “Poor diet is robbing millions of children of their health, development and lifetime prospects, because every hour, almost 100 children under the age of five die in Nigeria. Left untreated, children with severe acute malnutrition are nearly 12 times more likely to die than a healthy child.

“Nigeria is ranked number one in Africa and second in the world in terms of malnourished children. This is not the kind of statistics we should be proud of. Without urgent action, UNICEF estimates that approximately 14.7 million children under age five will suffer from moderate and severe acute malnutrition this year.

“Nigeria signed the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991 and access to good nutrition is an important right of every child. In 2003, Nigeria signed the Child Rights Act and 29 out of 36 states have strong Child Rights Act.

“If we have all of these in place, what are we doing about the right of these 21 million children to good nutrition?” She pointed out that the cost of inaction to address the challenge was 15 per cent Gross Domestic Product loss for Nigeria.

She also revealed that energy-only diets cost N707 per household per day while nutritious diets cost N1,687 per household per day, which is unaffordable by 34 per cent of households in the country.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Nutrition, Mrs Abimbola Adesanmi, said the event was to expand awareness of malnutrition and educate the citizens on their roles as stakeholders.

Though looking exaggerated, these figures seems true. Nigeria is not the world headquarters for extreme poverty for nothing. It is still manifesting.

The other day it was about the frightening number of out of school children. Today again, the number of malnourished children have heightened some more.
Nigeria which way nah?

Are these disturbing statistics really piquìng our leaders in this country @ all? The immediate solution to this raging menace is to ensure food security. Solve the farmers-fulani terrorist land grabbing quest and encourage local food production.

I will want the next administration to investigate and expose her criminal acts....But not waste time fighting them.

Because Buhari's ignorance and incompetent was smell over his continuous lamenting on fighting corruption when literally he wasn't doing anything...

Let the next government move in to restore the country while exposing them one after the other.

Very pathetic!

Buhari has told those whom he campaigned to and asked for votes to fix the economy, that they should go to farm and stop complaining

Tinubu will say the same thing if he ever gets elected. He was the one who promised them student loans to get their votes for Buhari in the 2015 election. Believe anything he says at your own peril. If you like use tribal sentiments, if your life hasn't changed since Buhari was elected in 2015, your life will still not change if Tinubu is elected.

Join the Peter Obi movement now! It's time to elect leaders, not rulers and autocrats

2,400 children die of malnutrition in Nigeria a day? That is 72,000 children a month and 864,000 a year. How many then die of accidents, illness, and other things?

I know there is poverty in Nigeria but this statistic is flawed. But who cares? Our leaders agree with it since they know these sorts of news are routine whenever the World Bank and the IMF are about to give them loans to "fight" malnutrition. Money they would steal. Even if they didn't steal it, the money serves no purpose other than throwing our nation into debt and further destroying our chances of growth.

The consequence of crowning evil leaders. They push Nigerians further below the poverty line with their evil policies dsigned to make them richer and fatter while Nigerians are crushed with scarcity of resources to survive thanks to the ceaseless increase in taxes direct and indirect...while also stashing bundles of cash in their homes as security against hunger...their weapon of economic oppression. Nigerians, vote wisely. Nigeria may never survive another corrupt leader

I wonder how many children we have in this country that 2,400 are dying of malnutrition alone a day. That is 72,000 a month and 864,000 a year. By the time we add those that die of other causes, then we wonder how many children would be left.

Follow the news. Within the next few weeks, you'll hear of the World Bank giving Nigeria loans to "fight malnutrition". Money no one would account for. They just keep throwing us into debt and giving us money to do things that don't improve our lives or generate any income we could use to pay back. In the end, we'd have to use the money we'd have used to improve our lives to repay/service those useless loans.

Ask the Wold Bak for loans to build an airport or a tech city, a factory or a university, or a world-class research center, and they will refuse because those sorts of things would allow us to generate wealth and skills they don't want us to have. But when it comes to giving you loans to feed the so-called "undernourished" children or build toilets, you'd find them there.

Exceptionally exaggerated stats.

2400 x 365 days =876,000 death ( malnutrition only)
There’s malaria, there’s typhoid, there’s cholera there’s aids etc it takes a about 9 months to replace each life. There are also deaths of adults from so many factors yet our population continues to grow exponentially.

I’m not buying it.
