Ajimobi Sets Up Committee On 100 Days In Office by bodejohn(m): 11:19am On Sep 02, 2011
Hmm,

President Goodluck Jonathan will today pay a one-day official visit to Oyo State in solidarity with the government of the state and victims of last Friday’s flood disaster that claimed more than 100 lives and unquantifiable properties.

The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Bosun Oladele, made this known while briefing newsmen, after a maiden state executive council meeting on Thursday.

Oladele stated that the visit would afford President Jonathan the opportunity to have a first-hand on-the-spot-assessment of the extent of the devastation caused by the flood.

The commissioner said a committee had been constituted to fine-tune arrangements at ensuring a hitch-free visit by the nation’s number one citizen.

President Jonathan had earlier sent a sympathy message through the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji Mohammed Sidi.

The commissioner pointed out that there would be no going back on the planned demolition of unapproved houses built on water paths, adding that it was better to save lives than to put up structures that would result in decimation of the citizens.

He also disclosed that a committee that would organise activities marking the 100 days in office of Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led administration had been put together.

Also briefing pressmen, the Commissioner for Environment and Habitat, Alhaji Dauda Wasiu, explained that part of the measures being taken by the state government to contain the consequence of the flood tragedy was to see to the fumigation of water courses and areas to nip the outbreak of diseases in the bud.

He added that government would begin intensive media campaign and sensitisation against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in rivers and other unauthorised places.

The special adviser to Governor Ajimobi on Information and Orientation, Gbolagade Busari, advised owners of the buildings affected in the planned demolition to vacate such properties on or before the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum.

He stated that the concerned buildings and their locations would be published in newspapers and also announced on radio and television.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Ms Olajumoke Akinjide, will also join President Jonathan in the visit to the state.
