At least 18 Nigerian nurses charged to court in US over fake certificates.
At least 18 Nigerian nurses charged to court in US over fake certificates.
The Texas Board of Nursing has filed formal charges against 23 nurses practicing in the United State of America over certificates forgery.

In a statement on its website, the Board listed names of the accused nurses of which not less than 18 are suspected to be of Nigerian descent.

According to the Texas Board of Nurses, all the suspects were caught in a grand fraudulent diploma/transcript scheme as revealed by an ongoing investigations.

Code-named 'Operation Nightingale,' the multi-state coordinated law enforcement action involving the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG), was launched on January 25, 2023, to arrest individuals engaged in a scheme to sell false and fraudulent nursing degree diplomas and transcripts.

The Nigerians involved are; Abiodun, Yetunde Felicia; Adelakun, Abiodun Aveez; Adelekan, Joseph Adewale; Adeoye, Vivien Temitope; Adewale, Modinat Abidemi; Afolabi, Olufemi Toun; Afolabi, Omowunmi F; Agbo, Odumegwu Steve; and Ajibade, Charlot Omotayo.

Others are; Akande, Olabisi Christiana; Akhigbe, Catherine; Akinrolabu, Folasade Margaret; Ako, Esiri Rachael; Akpan, Rosemary Moses; Alimi, Bukola A; Ani, Ndirika Justina; Aroh, Nchekwube C.; and Ayodeji, Sherifat Olubunmi.

The Texas Board of Nursing further explained that the individuals involved in the scheme procured fraudulent nursing credentials which they used to sit for the national nursing board exam.

"Upon successful completion of the board exam, the nursing applicants became eligible to obtain licensure in various states to work as an RN or a LPN/VN," the Board stated in a separate statement.

It also clarified that the formal charges filed against the eering nurses are not a final disciplinary action, therefore, they are permitted to work pending the outcome of the charges.

The statement read: "The Board has filed Formal Charges against the following nurses for fraudulently obtaining educational credentials. The Board is authorized to file Formal Charges against a nurse if probable cause exists that the nurse has committed an act listed in Tex. Occ. Code §301.452(b) or that violates other law. See Tex. Occ. Code §301.458. Further, Formal Charges are publicly available. See Tex. Occ. Code §301.466(b). Please note that Formal Charges are not a final disciplinary action, and a nurse is permitted to work, as a nurse, while Formal Charges are pending.

Other nurses named in the scandal are Abanda, Jacob Atambili; Addai, Agnes Fosuah; Anaaba, Awingrug Musah; Anthony-Annor, and Spendilove; Asanga, Albert Nshanui, but Pulse can't independently confirm their nationalities as of the time of filing this report.

"This list will be updated continuously as the Board receives additional information about the fraudulent diploma/transcript scheme," the statement added.

They are set to destroy the US healthcare system in their usual style.

Why, why why?

If your brain too block to read and pass to become a nurse why fake it to put innocent people's lives at risk?

You could have just settled as a health aide or PCA and still be collecting your dollars.

Greedy dumb people always looking for shortcuts to cash out even when it involves a sacred thing like life.

They should have gotten the certificate from the "source" to avoid things like it.
Of course such things happen in all third world countries.

They might still be useful to the state.
Those that sat for the national nursing board exam and passed and practising well.

Just like igbos lead in drug trafficking, yorubas lead in document falsification. They are known as the go to people if you need 'oluwole' certificate. That's is the reason why false documents are called 'oluwole'
I can bet my 2 cents that the few Igbo names there are all these my mama say I be ibo miscreants that grew up in lagos or even ikwere people

You’re quick to run here to post this news, so people can read and assume that Nigerians are criminals whereas fake nursing diplomas are mostly used by Americans.

More than 76000 fake nursing diploma was issued in Florida alone.

I am not justifying the use of fake prerequisite for sitting the board exam. The truth is that these people are brilliant to have passed the board exam. Most of them may have majored in sciences, arts and social sciences that are not nursing. But because of the desire to qualify as a nurse, they forged a nursing diploma, which is a requirement for sitting for the board exam.

I can relate it to passing ICAN in Nigeria. I didn't study accounting in school. But I sat for the accounting board exam, which is ICAN and passed. Some that studied accounting have not yet passed the accounting board exam which is ICAN. In this case, the requirements for the accounting board exam is a degree from any discipline.

However, fraud and forgeries are not acceptable anywhere. If getting nursing diploma is a requirement before sitting for board exam, let it be. If you want to sit for the exam, then go back to school and obtain a nursing diploma.

The ones without citizenship all stand the chance of deportation, especially the ones without green cards. They will also be permanently barred from the field of nursing. In the upcoming weeks, the names on the lists will triple and many fraudulent Nurse Practitioners will be added.
The reason that they weren’t immediately fired is because they have only been charged, not convicted, and in order to prevent suits, their employers are waiting for the state boards to suspend their licenses (which is happening now). They can’t work without a license and that saves the employers from having to fire them for other reasons.
In true Nigerian fashion, the ones that have been caught are naming the names of others as if that’ll help their case. They’re even telling on the ones working using someone else’s credentials or sharing credentials.
I hate this for honest Nigerians with obvious Nigerian names who did things the right way because before being hired, facilitates will place them under the microscope and make them jump through hoops to gain employment, just like banks now do.

You are engaging in confirmation bias here.

6 out of those 18 indicted are
non-Yorubas and this amounts to 33%. 12 of the 18 have Yoruba names amounting to 66%.

I have been a member of NL for 18 years now and your assertion that Ibos are gentle and don't abuse others here is false. This thread has not yet got to the NL front page yet, if it does, then you will see the insults from majorly some Ibos towards Yorubas and this has gone on for years now.

Already I can see some Ibos insulting Yorubas here because of this report including you who falsely said 90% of them are Yoruba muslims. It is disingeneous of you to say this.

Yoruba muslims (over half of
Yorubas) have the second largest muslim population in Nigeria after the Hausas, and 3rd are Kanuri muslims.

Yorubas are over 50 million estimated in Nigeria, and the
Yorubas who are muslims are very influential politically and it has become a big blunder for some Ibos on this forum to be insulting them because of national politics, or demonizing them like you have done here by falsely saying 90% of the names are Yoruba muslims. When you Ibo guys insult Yorubas whose faith is Islam, you are also insulting and offending Yorubas online and offline who are non-muslims because many of them are relatives (nuclear and extended family members).

Cultural etiquette and sensitivity is needed when relating with folks in a multicultural country or setting.

Second, counterfeiting of wines, pharmaceutical drugs, forgery of documents and pirating of books, videos and music recordings are carried out by Ibos in different
Nigerian states and exist in Iboland (Onitsha, Aba, etc) as well for years now as widely reported in the electronic and print media.

Ethnic bigotry, falsehoods and confirmation bias must be stopped here on NL and offline.

There you go again ma. There's more than meets the eye in this case. This is a Nigerian forum and so it's not unexpected to highlight Nigerians in any negative news event. This practice have been common in the US and it's a dangerous precedent for the health sector.

These were among thousands that were issued fake nursing diplomas by different nursing schools.

I will not exonerate anyone from engaging in fraudulent activities but this is not a Nigerian problem like you make it sound. There's a reason this kind of activities is very common in the US. There's a reason why there're hundreds of unapproved institutions in the US awarding fake diplomas/degrees. Like you rightly stated "this country doesn’t reward scammers" but rewards scamming institutions.

The practice is common and nothing new, from racketeering in prestigious institutions to fake practitioners. These people, regardless of their nationality, didn’t complete the coursework but instead paid for completion certificates and in just about all cases, didn’t sit for the NCLEX but paid someone to sit for it on their behalf. Read up on the DOJ website. The majority were Africans and Carribeans because they usually are the people who keep this kind of thing among their people. But I don’t care if they’re White, Black, Blue, or Brown, anybody with fraudulent medical credentials is dangerous and should be stripped of all privileges.

There are people that genuinely obtained their medical qualifications but are still careless and reckless in practice. Some may have forged theirs and still remain cerebral and professional in practice. Though I dont support forgeries and fraud in whatever form.We have lots of qualified medical personnel in Nigeria that are reckless. The issue of professionalism and skill set is innate. It is something that comes naturally with a person.

Thanks ma. That event changed my life. The irony of the issue was I was the one pressing for charges while the family declined. However I must tell you. If out of the billions of humans, you're able to find one person who shares the same vision as you and she died due to avoidable circumstances, your world will never be the same. That's a tragedy I'll never recover from.
