Senator Ekweremadu, Wife And Their Doctor To Be Sentenced On May 5 by Fira09(m): 6:13pm On Mar 24, 2023
Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, and their doctor, Obinna Obeta will be sentenced on May 5 after they were convicted of organ trafficking, in the first verdict of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act in the United Kingdom.

The former deputy senate president, his wife, Beatrice, 56, and Dr. Obinna Obeta, 51, were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey.

They conspired to bring the 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney, the jury found.

The man had been offered a reward to become a donor for the senator’s daughter after kidney disease forced her to drop out of a master’s degree in film at Newcastle University, the court heard.

Back in February 2022, the young man was falsely presented to a private renal unit at Royal Free hospital in London as Sonia’s cousin in a failed attempt to persuade medics to carry out an £80,000 transplant. For a fee, a medical secretary at the hospital acted as an Igbo translator between the man and the doctors to help try to convince them he was an altruistic donor, the court heard.

The prosecutor Hugh Davies KC told the court the Ekweremadus and Obeta had treated the man and other potential donors as “disposable assets – spare parts for reward”. He said they entered an “emotionally cold commercial transaction” with the man.

The behaviour of Ekweremadu, a successful lawyer and founder of an anti-poverty charity who helped draw up Nigeria’s laws against organ trafficking, showed “entitlement, dishonesty and hypocrisy”, Davies told the jury.

He said Ekweremadu, who owns several properties and had a staff of 80, “agreed to reward someone for a kidney for his daughter – somebody in circumstances of poverty and from whom he distanced himself and made no inquiries, and with whom, for his own political protection, he wanted no direct contact”.

Davies added: “What he agreed to do was not simply expedient in the clinical interests of his daughter, Sonia, it was exploitation, it was criminal. It is no defence to say he acted out of love for his daughter. Her clinical needs cannot come at the expense of the exploitation of somebody in poverty.”

Ekweremadu, who denied the charge, told the court he was the victim of a scam. Obeta, who also denied the charge, claimed the man was not offered a reward for his kidney and was acting altruistically.

Beatrice denied any knowledge of the alleged conspiracy. Sonia did not give evidence.

WhatsApp messages showed to the court revealed Obeta charged Ekweremadu about £8,000 made up of an “agent fee” and a “donor fee”.

Ekweremadu and Obeta admitted falsely claiming the man was Sonia’s cousin in his visa application and in documents presented to the hospital.

Davies said Ekweremadu ignored medical advice to find a donor for his daughter among genuine family members. He said: “At no point in time was there ever any intention for a family member close, medium or distant to do what could be paid for from a pool of donors.”

The judge, Mr. Justice Jeremy Johnson, will pass a sentence on May 5.

I really feel for the Ekweremadus.

Paternal and maternal instincts at play.

Any sane parents can fall into this divine trap because most can't stand their children dying before their very eyes except if there is absolutely nothing they can do about it.

Besides, even if they are truly guilty as charged, they weren't planning to commit murder at least. It was just a case of understanding between them and the young lad. Though I ain't supporting such extremity, it's just a classical case of how parents can go crazy because of their children.

Pretty Sonia needed a Kidney transplant.

A 21 year old man was brought in from Lagos as the donor after matching kidneys were confirmed through a middle-man (a doctor who has been convicted with the Ekweremadus).

He was promised £7,000 pounds to sell his kidney.

At the hospital, the doctor in charge of the surgical operation interviewed the donor/victim.

One of the requirements for the surgery was that the donor can afford life-long medical care that comes with living with one kidney.

The donor/victim couldn't give assurances that he could afford life-long medical care and he wasn't briefed about the pros and cons of the process before he accepted to come to the UK.

The donor/victim walked into a police station and made a report.

Ekweremadu, his wife and the middle man doctor were arrested.

Under UK laws, organ donors are not to be paid for donating their organs. They are to do so voluntarily without charge.

The Modern Slavery Act enacted by parliament in 2015 was violated.

Ekweremadu, his wife and middle man doctor have been convicted.

They await sentencing which could be as severe has life imprisonment.

The donor/victim has been granted asylum because his safety in Nigeria cannot be guaranteed.

Pretty Sonia the sick girl has been discharged and acquitted by the court. She still hopes for a kidney donor.

The case is the first of its kind in the UK and the conviction is a landmark achievement since the enactment of the Modern Slavery Act in 2015.

Sonia is so pretty, kind-hearted and harmless 💕💕💕💕. I'm depressed. I feel for her. She'll live with the guilt of destroying her own parents 😢😭😭😭

It is still a crime.

Let's not excuse crime please.

Plus, why couldn't any one of her siblings donate a kidney?

Well, I believe they have had their day in court.

At least we trust the UK judicial system far from Nigeria's.

But I hope that the judge would consider arrangements to help their daughter get medical care.

if one of them or siblings or closed relatives had donated their organs this would not have happened to them. they could get up to life imprisonment

cool

You reap what you sow....

Meanwhile...
FCT is not a state, but for the purpose of Presidential election it will count as a state

Technically election hold in 37 territories, but it will be a blunder if the electoral act had stipulated 25% in 2/3 of 37states directly so they found a grammatic solution "and FCT" which implies + in maths
Election is all about numbers not Grammar, so the requirement is 2/3 in 37states generally base on the fact that all states are Equal, segregating Abuja means FCT is superior to other state. which is not true

Any candidate with 25% in 25 states using 37 is qualify to be declare winner, moreover Tinubu had 30 so why should Inec not declare him

Nobody should come here with a pity mindset, This man is an organ trafficker and deserves to be punished for it. This is austerity paying him back for all his atrocities to mankind.

So, "it is not a crime" is what you understood from the comment?

Because I can't simply wrap my head around where "it is still a crime" actually comes from.

Is there any statement in the comment that suggested it is not a crime?

beatrice ekeremadu looks ready to take over whatever wing of the prison she is put in

She has accepted that she is going to be in a British jail for the next 3 years or more. Unless she is put in a low security prison (don't know if they do that in UK) she will have to assert dominance

Oh..what a pity. As much as I’d love to feel for these guys I also feel more for the poor boy who’d have been left to suffer for the rest of his life had the deal been done. They’d deny him completely and he’d never have had access to them ever and ever again.

And who knows he may die untimely
