Owerri — Activities in Owerri, the Imo State capital have been grounded to a halt following the strike embarked upon by workers in the state over the non-implementation of the minimum wage.

Our correspondent reports that all government offices, banks and the state secretariat were under lock and key yesterday. The strike, it was gathered is biting hard on the people of the state due to the fact that banks are part of the strike.

Meanwhile, the state government has commenced negotiations with the NLC with a view to finding a solution to the problem.

The chairman of NLC in the state, Comrade Reginald Anyadike told Daily Trust that that they went on strike when they discovered that Governor Rochas Okorocha was not interested in approving the implementation of the N18,000 minimum wage for workers in the state.

He said the governor earlier agreed to pay only workers on grade levels 01 to 6 the new wage, but that the NLC rejected the proposal. The NLC held a meeting yesterday to review some issues raised during their last meeting with the governor, but details of the meeting were not known at the time of filling this report.
