Potential home owners have been inclined to believe that a bricklayer with 20years experience is better to handle their project than a fresh out of school qualified structural engineer.
What experience does fresh out of school graduate have?

You can't call a graduate an engineer until he or she gets certified by Coren

It's like a fresh graduate of Law, claiming to be a lawyer without being called to BAR

I feel for the trade.
Structural engineers will calculate the exact material required to put the structure up.
But because we don't really know if materials are actually what they are supposed to be, the structural engineer then has to add a factor of safety: ie, some extra material is added to ensure that even if the builder buys rubbish in the market, the building will still stand based on the calculations.
If he doesn't communicate this well, the client would think, he's just making the building expensive with plenty materials.
it's the experience of communication that structural engineers require.
The Brick layer doesn't know any of these calculations.
But if he communicates better (speaking Yoruba etc), the client might connect better with him and believe what he says over the Engineer.

The regulatory agency in Lagos State is not doing enough to stop this menace. Building owners must be made to pay heavy fines as they fail to contract qualified structural engineers for such construction

Department or agency that handle this should employ more and more people to do the job of looking around and identify the houses that can likely collapse.

The public should be sensitized all the time to report houses that can collapse.

To pay heavy fines is not enough; there should be heavy prison sentences. You can't be allowed to just pay a fine to get away with murder

This same area experienced a collapse of a similar nature not too long ago... The entire area is a wet land... Just a few distance from this area, govt is expanding the road linking Daleko/Isolo to Ikotun axis, the engineers wanted to create an alternative drainage water path (gutter) and have not dug deep before hitting water.

Do the maths!

Sometimes it just boils down to personal greed because even a qualified engineer can still go for substandard materials

This is very true. I helped a friend build a house. The only professional we used was an architect. The rest, omo na bricklayer o...but that house eh, na only nuclear bomb fit fall am

It's better to use qualified professionals to avoid stories that touch.

This, and also supervise your work personally.

Nice smiley
In as much as people build house we need to be careful. Be you house owner, engineer and contractor or whatsoever.
On how we build where we lay our head we need to build with care and be cautious of where and how we build it nothing much.
Not that you'll use 1 bag of cement to mould 80 blocks and even up killing people

As a home owner and someone that wants to build a house.... Employ the services of an engineer (Civil).

Buy your materials yourself. Just pay the engineer his services fee

This.
Buy your materials yourself.

The so-called bricklayer will give you quotation, then you give him money.
Only for him to go and buy substandard materials or lower quantity of what he quoted and start managing.

They don't have the fear of God, neither do they value human life.

Still a regulatory failure if inferior materials exist in the market for purchase or they are not caught on site before being deployed.
Let's not make excuses for failure.

ecolime:

It's a building under construction. There is no way regulatory agencies can be on every building site 247.

Our people will submit designs and correct quantity survey for approval and then buy inferior materials later.

This get-rich-quick syndrome is killing us all. RIP to the dead 😪

The house owner will fight professionals tooth and nail just because the professional builder is doing the right thing.Wilfully hyping bricklayer over the builder. At the end of the day the owner is boxed in in a corner and he bears the brunt of his narrow thinking and greediness.
