Gang violation suspect identified – Minister

The Minister of Youth Development, Mallam Mobolaji Abdullahi, said on Thursday, that one of the suspects in the gang violation of a yet-to-be identified female had been identified. Reports say the five men who violated the young woman recorded the act, which was later uploaded to the Internet.

The incident, which is believed to have occured in Abia State sparked outrage nationwide.

He, however, expressed doubts that the suspects would be convicted based on the available evidence.

Abdullahi said this in Lagos at a meeting with youth organisations.

The minister said, “More than 70 per cent of the information we have on the violation will not be said here for obvious security reasons. But I can tell you we have information on it.

“The girl is not a student of Abia State University. She was violated in an off-campus residential area of students.

“One of them (suspects) has been identified conclusively.”

Although the faces of the rapists are not seen in the video, the minister said the National Human Rights Commission was on top of the situation.

He said, “Some legal experts have told us that it may be difficult to convict the rapists because the video does not reveal the face of the victims.

“The National Human Rights Commission is working with the Ministry of Youth Development. The commission, which is headed by a competent lawyer, is on top of this case.

“This is law, if we can not press for violation, there are other charges that we can press. I can assure you that justice will be done.”

The minister, at the meeting, fielded questions from some of the 50 selected participants, among whom were Fela Durotoye and Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde, on national issues bearing on youth.

He promised that his ministry would organise a conference for not just potential violation victims but potential rapists, to address the ugly trend among youths.

He also reiterated his plan to review the National Youth Service Corps, saying corps members would no longer be posted to banks and other private institutions.

He said, “We are looking into possibility of stopping corps members from serving in bank and other private institutions. Some people have said it is correct while some have said it is not. But any private institution that wants a corps member must sign an undertaking that it will employ such corps member after his service.”

The minister, who admitted that corruption was a menace in the country, said the prevalence of corruption could not be wholly blamed on the government but the kind of the nation’s society.

“The issue of corruption has to do with the kind of society we live in. This is a society where the respect given to people depends on the type of car they drive. The society still turns back to say people are corrupt,” the minister said.

Maybe they would not be able to identify those boys facially with the video but I heard they spoke during the recording so my suggestion is to employ the use of a voice recorgnition software, pattern match what they have on video with their voice and you have a world standard evidence. The sketch artist can then nail the coffin blindfolded. Shikena

Re: ABSU Gang Violation Suspect Has Been Identified – Minister by duduspace(m): 5:57am On Sep 23, 2011
This sounds like porkies to me, with the recording, voice matching (technology or expert testimony), interrogation of the suspects, victim's statement and corroboration from other sources in the immediate vicinity privy to all or some parts of the incident, conviction of the perpetrators should be pretty easy.
Anything that girl says in a court of law about that incident will be accepted as authentic evidence by any judge or jury who watch that video. Find the girl and you have an open and shut case.

Thank you Minister for pursuing this.
But we are not talking of prosecution through law courts. It is time wasting, puts the girl under needless pressure and publicity and the sentence will be a shame!
Just give us name, pic and address of the guy. Leave the rest to us. Justice will be ADEQUATELY done!

I wonder how some legal experts can quickly conclude that conviction may not be easy  especially when the police are yet to conclude all their investigation. Something look fishy here it seems the ministers are trying not to raise our hopes of easy conviction for these suspects knowing fully well how Nigerian system operates  undecided undecided
Re: ABSU Gang Violation Suspect Has Been Identified – Minister by stkris(m): 7:51am On Sep 23, 2011
This minister must be slow or something. How can you publicly assert that it may be difficult to convict these individuals simply because their faces are not shown in the vid. That is why there is something called investigation you slowpoke.

The vid is a solid framework to base a solid investigation on, but then again the Nigerian factor must be fully factored in. The notion that if someone is not caught with their pants down presents an almost impossible case is just plane ignorant. Little wonder people get away with almost anything in Nigeria.

At least this is a departure from the shoddy and disappointing handling of the case by the Abia state government and Abia Police.

Thank God o but how can he conclude that conviction will be difficult with all the distinguished lawyers that we have in this land? Anyway we will fire serious prayers to assist the human rights activists in their bid to convict them against the Ministers narrow view. God will surely make a way where there seems to be no way.
Re: ABSU Gang Violation Suspect Has Been Identified – Minister by blackchief(m): 8:24am On Sep 23, 2011
My people is not the technology to identify the individual that is the problem, the question is what does the Nigerian Evident Act say about the use of the information obtained using voice and video evidences. We need a Lawyer in the house to educate us more.

May God help us all

The 10min video didn't look like 100% rape

With a good lawyer, they have nothing to worry about

They'll walk free after which they'll sue Linda Ikeji's blog and Nairaland

BTW, i use to hear bout rape stories like this all the time happening in various campuses.
Just seeing it on video for the first time. If ladies involved don't come out, then we have
no rape case (ie its not rape)
