Jonathan happy with outcome of Amnesty Programme

, vows to stamp out insecurity

President Goodluck Jonathan has attributed the buoyancy of the Nigerian economy to the relative success of the Amnesty Programme for repentant restive youths of the Niger Delta region. He said oil production now stands between 2.6 million-2.8 million barrels per day. Jonathan spoke yesterday in Cross Rivers State during the last batch graduation ceremony at the Amnesty Camp in Obubra.

He said the Disarmanent and Demobilisation of the first phase of the Presidential Amnesty programme has closed. On the effectiveness of the Amnesty initiative, Jonathan noted that in 2008 alone, the nation lost N3 trillion at the peak of the activities of the Niger Delta ex-combatants. Represented by the Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs , Hajia Maina Ibrahim-Kuchi, he stated that the current high oil production was a testimony of the success of the amnesty programme.

He said: "It got to a point where Nigeria’s export dwindled to as low as 800, 000 bpd, compared with a targeted 2.2 million bpd for the first quarter of 2009. "In 2008 alone, it was estimated that Nigeria lost over N3 trillion as a result of militancy in the Niger Delta". He expressed his administration’s determination to restore security of lives and property across the country, saying peace is necessary for development.

"This government is determined and poised to stamp out insecurity in all parts of the country. "It is when we live in peace as a united nation that we can feed our teaming people, tackle unemployment and confront head-on infrastructural challenges. "We shall not relent until every part of Nigeria is rid of restiveness and other challenges of insecurity," he said.

4, 149 ex- militants trained at Obubra have been placed in skill acquisition centres and formal education in Nigeria and offshore by the Amnesty Office. 20, 192 ex-militants have so far undergone the disarmament and demobilisation training and being re-integrated into civil society. Another 6, 616 that have disarmed are waiting undergoing non-violence training in Obubra in the second phase of the amnesty programme.

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Chief Executive Officer of the Amnesty Programme, Hon. Kingsley Kuku, urged the ex-combatants to remain peaceful and hard working to make the most use of the opportunity provided them by the programme. He also charged the international community to support the programme by granting visas to the ex-militants for overseas training and studies.

Oil production? Probably a misnomer in the Nigerian context,

More like oil troway, oil drill and sell, oil leakage,

Yea right! It's a success Mr Luck, after all you made millionaires out of those millitant leaders who were previously complaining of poverty and marginalisation.

This was a Yar Adua initiative. The late president deserves an accolade for the success of this programme not his ex-deputy who inherited his post
Re: Amnesty Programme Is A Success - Gej by edicolove: 2:24pm On Sep 25, 2011
^^^The amnesty program was not a Yaradua initiative. The amnesty program was the recommendation of the commitee that was setup to look into the crisis in the Niger Delta at a time when production levels had hit an all time low of 700, 000 barrels per day in the heat of the millitants bombings of pipelines and kidnapping of expatriates. The Commitee was handled by President Goodluck Jonathan, then the VP. The commitee came up with a proposal for amnesty as the best option going foward. Yaradua initially rejected the recommendation but when he was warned that the Nigerian economy could not sustain for long, he had to accept.

Aliameshegha and Goodluck were the main anchor between the militants and the government. That was why it was easy for Goodluck to follow it up and complete it. The scheme has trained(and still training) about 26, 000 militants in centers in Nigeria and around the world. You think Yaradua on his own would have chosen to train Niger delta youths like that when the north hasnt had that kind of training? You are funny guy!

@ Edicolove,

Please under which tenure was it initiated? Please do not try riddle a dead man's achievement in your quest to always uplift Jonathan. You and I know that during Yar Adua's tenure, Jonathan was nothing but a passive vice-president.

@ Edicolove,

Please under which tenure was it initiated? Please do not try riddle a dead man's achievement in your quest to always uplift Jonathan. You and I know that during Yar Adua's tenure, Jonathan was nothing but a passive vice-president.

1. That something was initiated under a man's tenure doesnt make it his initiative. You called it his initiative and that was wrong. If you had said we should give him some credit for the scheme, I wont have objected. he deserves some credit, absolutely. But to call it his initiative is not correct.

2. You are accusing me of a crime you committed so I will say it back to you. Please do not try to deprive GEJ of his achievement in your quest to discredit him and in your ego driven refusal to admit he has made the scheme a resounding success. All that happened in Yaradua's time was submitting of weapons. Nothing more, so how can you say all the credit belongs to him and GEJ was a passive VP? You can see your double standard.

3. This thread was about GEJ, not Yaradua and you immediately attacked him because you are afraid he is making progress so you want to quickly discredit him so you claimed the credit should all go to Yaradua. Your tactics and methods are too transparent man. You should try other methods next time.

4. Please speak for yourself. "You and I" do not know that GEJ was a passive VP. That is your own personal opinion so dont attribute it to everyone else. GEJ was in charge of the committee that proposed nthe amnesty. No argument or bad belle can change that or take that away. Thank you!

^^ How come Americans give credit to Ronald Reagan for the economic boom and not the Many professors he used to achieve this?

How come OBJ takes credit for the telecommunication revolution and not the many Engineers and economic advisers who were used

The amnesty programs is Yar Aduas idea.

Retardeen has yet to do anything on his own, A man who has no shoes most likely would have no brains to conceptualize ideas

, Sigh,
Another Retardeen supporter with a weak argument who can't save his life if he has to by putting forth a strong case.

Re: Amnesty Programme Is A Success - Gej by Nobody: 7:02am On Sep 26, 2011
'amnesty' was a mistake and has become a hydra headed monster which ushered in the crime wave in the east and boko haram.

it was essentially the FG negotiating from a position of weakness.

today we are reaping the whirlwind - all sorts of criminal are emboldened because they know the FG is ineffectual and the state govts have eejits who will promise amnesty to armed robbers
