Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, the editor of the news website, ukpakareports.com has been arrested by the State Security Service (S.S.S). Mr Ellis-Ezenekwe is being held over an attempt to extort 6 million naira from Uche Ekwunife, a member of the Federal House of Representatives. The journalist allegedly demanded for the money in return for persuading another website pointblanknews.com to remove a video purportedly showing Mrs Ekwunife having sex with another woman.
Mr Ellis-Ezenekwe was arrested after the politician wrote a petition to the authorities. He had previously worked for Nigeria’s leading news website saharareporters.com before leaving to start ogenereports.com and subsequently launching ukpakareports.com.
Mrs Ekwunife represents Aniocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Federal Constituency. A former member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), she defected to the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) and ran for governor in 2010. She moved to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) after losing that election and won the party’s House of Representatives primaries earlier this year.
Mr Joshua Yakubu, the State Director of the S.S.S said that Mr Ellis-Ezenekwe was arrested on Sunday at Mrs Ekunife’s residence and that he would be charged to court after the agency had concluded its investigations.
“Mrs. Ekwunife telephoned us and followed it up with a petition and along the line, the man fell into our trap.So, it is true that he is being detained and we are still investigating the matter. For now, we cannot say if he is guilty or not, but the allegation was that Ezenekwe approached her and demanded N6 million to stop a publication on the Internet. We have impounded his laptop and collected his telephones and we are still doing technical investigation, including analyzing the telephones analysing the telephones and laptop to know what they have been used for,” he said.

The fact that the blogger tried to blackmail Mrs. Ekwunife does not mean the story of the governor's infidelity is false. I have heared this news sometimes before reading it online. While it is not proved, we cannot just push it aside. I believe there are many of the governor's apologists on NL but we continue probing until the truth is told.
