President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) a few minutes ago signed into law, The Student Loan Bill, which provides for interest-free loans to indigent Nigerian students.

Recall that Tinubu, during his campaign, had promised to give student loans as part of efforts to develop the education sector and also build the youth capacity.

Tinubu made the promise at the British Royal Institute in London.

“Youths are the greatest asset of tomorrow,” Tinubu said in Chatham House while fielding questions from participants at the event.

He that they will be part of his “all-inclusive” government, pointing to the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“The education system is to change. We would overhaul it and tinker with some areas with the philosophy that no one would be left behind. There will be student loans for all. We are going to reform the Almajiri system, We are equally going to build more schools, recruit more teachers and train them,” the former Lagos state governor said.

To further help young people, he said if elected, his government would equally introduce technology hubs where youths can acquire digital skills to better develop their leadership skills.

“Youths can even develop technological languages on their own and make a better 21st-century approach to governance in Nigeria,” he said.

Monday’s event focussed on economic and foreign policies as well as national security among others.

This is good.
But they can as well call it Scholarship because no student will pay back a loan.

ManWater:
Obviously, the success of this scheme will be predicated on the recipient students later graduating & becoming gainfully employed.

cool

Good one... Gbajabiamila really working

Many bills need urgent attention and signature to be law

All the solutions to Nigerian problems have been debated since 1999 and bills sent for assent, policy documents and National conference documents are all in the Aso Rock Archives and library

Tinubu would implement all policy one after the other

Benefits of the bill

*University sets their Tuition according to ASUU and NASU requirements

*Tuition at 500,000 to 700,000 students have to pay or take a loan

* Serious Student get a Loan to pay

* Unserious student drops out, becoming Olosho and yahoo

*Rich Student pay upfront

No more ASUU strike, as University would be fully autonomous

But they can as well call it Scholarship because no student will pay back a loan.

They will pay it back and it is not a scholarship.

The full details of the bill will be out soon and lot of questions will be answered.

Wait and see how we will implement it, then you will see what is called Marginalisation. Biafrans will get their own students loan from Peter Giringori Obituary. I don’t have to tell you that the head of the Agency will be an Omoluabi, you know that already

Loan or no loan, the FG will continue to fix the highest cut off mark on SE and dem go still dey smash am, get admitted and graduate.

Good one.
Where will the fund be sourced from?

Tinubu keeps signing whatever Gbaja ask him to sign without detailed plans of execution.

You will find they'll find a way of making you pay it back long after you stop being a student since Tinubu nor the loan givers are not into the sort of charity you are thinking of.

Even the part about interest free will turn out to be untrue as you'd find that the fees that cost so much now will more than double or triple to compensate so you end up owing lots.

You can japa afterwards of course, making it harder for them to make you pay, but I wouldn't be surprised if the loan is tied to your passport so you can't get one if you owe, or to your parents who'll have to pay it back if you don't. They can also make it a requirement of future employment like they do with NYSC, such that if you don't serve or don't pay back your loan you are disqualified for employment.

We shall find out in the future of course, so I'll make a note of this thread in my diary for 5 and 10 years time to reassess how it's gone.

Next thing he has to do is scrap NYSC so I can earn what I deserve instead of subsidising my employer by making my labour cheap for them while getting the skills and knowledge gets more expensive for me.

First, Legendhero, thanks for bringing this news to Nairaland. Very positive outlook.

Manwater, it is not scholarship.

Scholarship is govt assistance. A loan is self assistance through banks. However, govt will guarantee the deficits.

So say someone take loan and go to university and graduates, then start working. Bank can followup with their employer, govt or private sector, to begin deducting payback for the loan. It is interest free so whatever they took in loan isbwhat they pay.

Scholarship on the other hand does not ask for payback.

Got it?

If they will not bring favouritism, that is a way to go. At least children from poor family can have access to quality education.

Hope this is not another propaganda because its has been the Hallmark of this new administration by accruing praises from the initiatives of the immediate past administration.

Any initiative not felt on the Nigeria streets, ain't nothing.

Well, we'll wait for details of the scheme but it seems the only chance of repayment would be if the students graduate & become gainfully employed.
