48 Held As Task Force, Cattle Sellers Clash

Officials of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environment and Offences (Enforcement) Unit have clashed with Hausa cattle sellers at Abattoir area of Agege, southwest Nigeria, over the demolition of their shanties.
After the clash, 46 cattle sellers and two foreigners were arrested for attacking government officials and will be prosecuted, says the taskforce Chairman, Supol Bayo Sulaiman.
Officials of the taskforce had stormed the railway line behind the abattoir and demolished over 100 shanties on Sunday after the cattle sellers were dislodged from the shanties as a result of security threat.
Shortly after the taskforce left the scene, the cattle sellers started re-building the shanties which were demolished on the order of Governor Babatunde Fashola.

On Wednesday, the taskforce officials stormed the area again to pull down the shanties that were rebuilt.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the taskforce officials were attacked by the cattle sellers with daggers, knives and stones, saying that their shanties must not be demolished.

During the clash which lasted for hours a paramilitary officer, Victor Ohimani was stabbed by one of the rioter, Iliasu Amodu, who claimed to be a Togolese.
The taskforce officials, led by Sulaiman released several canisters of teargas into the air to disperse the attackers.
Speaking with P.M.NEWS, the taskforce chairman, Sulaiman confirmed that the Hausa settlers attacked his officials for demolishing the shanties which they were rebuilding.
He said he was shocked that the Hausas came back to start rebuilding the shanties which were destroyed by the government on Sunday, saying that the taskforce would not allow them to come back to the place again.

Sulaiman stated that some taskforce officials had been deployed to ensure that the demolished shanties were not rebuilt again as government must sanitise the environment.
He said those arrested would be charged to court for attacking government officials with daggers, arrows and stones.

They must have millions of these rogue elements then. Jos pogrom, Kaduna pogrom, Kano Pogrom, Zango Kataf/Kaduna pogrom, etc. Other ethnic groups also have rogue elements but they don't walk around with daggers and sparrows looking for who to massacre.

Since when did an abattoir stop being a place they slaughter animals and became where they rear cattles?

Btw,were they pre-informed of the demolition exercise, given deadline? What options did the government offer?where do they slaughter their cows from now on?

Most of Nigeria's open market abbatoir are worse than a shytehole.Jeez, and we all consume . . .oh lordy!

Many of the posters on this thread, who live abroad BTW, are expressing disappointing, if not shocking, views, on this issues. What kind of government will destroy the living quarters of  her citizens without providing some sort of compensation or resettlement of the displaced? The answer is, an insensitive and  irresponsible government.

Shame on the officials and the governor himself!  This is not the way to exercise a government's right of eminent domain. Every Nigerian should have a right to defend his/her home or business with full force. These victims of government abuse must be set free.

@ekt_bear Your comment is simply inhumane! These guys have been in Lagos for quite some years and IMO should be regarded as Indigenes of Lagos state. Deporting them will make absolutely no sense. . . . How can you deport them from their own state? LET PEACE AND HARMONY REIGN IN OUR ONE NIGERIA!
Re: Cattle Sellers Clash With The Lagos Task Force by nduchucks: 1:02pm On Oct 08, 2011
You people talking about building theses settlements on railway lines are being disingenious. First of all, the settlements were not on top of any railway line, but close to it. Secondly, where were the government agencies in charge of environment and enforcement for the past 10years when the settlements were established? It seems to me as if the officials in charge of the task force are the ones who should have been fired and locked up long ago, for failure to do their jobs.

As legitimate Lagos settlers and non criminal citizens, who run legitimate businesses, these people should have been resettled promptly.
Re: Cattle Sellers Clash With The Lagos Task Force by jerryben12: 1:06pm On Oct 08, 2011
Nonsense! Why didn't Fashola provide them a place first before pulling down their structures? Fashola should be questioned.

Mind you, these men might be of Northern extract but they are now full fledged indigenes of Lagos, their adopted state.
Re: Cattle Sellers Clash With The Lagos Task Force by Dede1(m): 2:17pm On Oct 08, 2011
The personal delusion about environment exuded by Lagos State government in dastardly destruction of shanties in Lagos is very deplorable. The governor had forgotten that Oshodi, Mafoluku, Mushin and Ajegunle were shanty settlements at one time.

That been said, these ancient-looking cattle sellers from northern region of Nigeria should stop approaching every issue with dagger.

Federal government should ban the carry of dagger. The ban for concealed weapon such as dagger would have been promulgated if act of carrying dagger was a social or cultural thing in the southern Nigeria. I intend to carry concealed pistol in Nigeria if a person from one section of damnable country is allowed to carry concealed dagger.

This is just another unjust battle between rich and poor. It has little to do with aboki, they were only fighting because they were being made homeless.
It is inhuman to bulldoze the houses of the poor without relocating them. Where does the Lagos state govt expect them to go, if not become armed robbers out of despondency?
Re: Cattle Sellers Clash With The Lagos Task Force by 2mch(m): 2:42pm On Oct 08, 2011
It has to be done by somebody. There is entirely no planning in Nigeria. You cannot build and setup shops or homes on rail way lines. Or will they prefer the SG send one archaic 1ton train to drive through the settlement? City life is not for everyone. If you cant afford it move to a state where you can. Kudo's to fashola. And please deport that mumu togolese. Imagine? Nonsense upon rabbish tongue. Now to those mumu's that have taken over the whole waterway. Dropping trash and feaces in the water.

I agree with you 100% on this one. There appears to still be hope for your redemption.
